What's best, running, walking briskly or swimming continously for half an hour?

running, according to \link{http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi\here}

Walking and especially running are 'impact' sports and will strengthen your bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life. Swimming is a good aerobic exercise as is running - which was 'best' would probably depend how hard you were working - e.g. gentle jogging not as good aerobically as a hard swim set, but might be better than pootleing up and down the pool on a gentle breastroke. Bare in mind also that the most aerobic activity isn't necessarily 'best' for you. If you are unused to exercise then walking might be best to start with.

to add to that, swimming (if you do it properly and push youself) will give you a much better all over body work out than running does.

A good balance would be to alternate. Running will get you fitter and probably help lose weight more quickly, swimming more toned.

running according to weightwatchers exercise trackers
but think of your joints :(
Swimming regularly is super for all round toning
Walk briskly to the pool, then swim then walk home again - sorted!!!!

swimming worked wonders for me when I was doing it regularly. Flattened my stomach, strengthened arm muscles & toned my legs.
I think different type of exercises work better for different people.

I can't run because of ligament damage in my left knee, so I have to find other ways of keeping fit & non-lardy!

lapsedrunner · 06/04/2006 10:41

Definitely running, off road running is even better (= harder work) Grin

motherinferior · 06/04/2006 11:20

Frankly, whichever you're more likely to stick to. Me, I swim.

notasheep · 06/04/2006 12:00

Running-but then years down the line your knees will of had it.But i cant swim.

GDG · 06/04/2006 12:02

I think swimming because it tones all your muscles in one exercise.

I love both but find running is hard on my knees - I ran a lot as a child (Sale Harriers no less!) and it's knackered my knees.

leogaela · 06/04/2006 12:49

If you have no problems with your knees and you aren't running more than a marathons a year you shouldn't develop knee problems from running.

I've also run since a child (Norfolk Olympiads)and hae no problems with my knees.

Anyone can run, but with swimming if you are a head up stroll down the pool swimmer you won't get much out of it, you need to swimm properly and put effort into it.

if you are new to running or really unfit and overweight then you should start on a run walk program and build up slowly.

Mosschops30 · 06/04/2006 13:15

i have only just started going to the gym (4th week now), I started fast walking on the treadmill and culd only manage to run for 2 minutes. Today I achieved my personal best of 15 minutes solid running Smile.
From the worlds worst runner (think Phoebe in that Friends episode) if I can do it anyone can.

P.s I've lost 7lb in 3 weeks from gym alone, just eating everything I want the same

leogaela · 06/04/2006 14:57

Well done Mosschops:):):)! That is impressive!

drosophila · 06/04/2006 15:12

There is loads of things you can do in a pool other than swimming. Get a kick board and only use your legs for a few lengths or you can buy special belts that allow you to run under water. I used to do a lot of swimming and found that this variety made the time fly. Also I find I am very relaxed after swimming.

I used to run in the gym but not anymore anymore (slipped disc and SI joint problems). I really hate running and never found it very good for weight loss.

Dannie · 06/04/2006 15:22

If you can design a running route starting from your house, running has the advantage that it only takes the time you take to do it, whereas in order to swim for half an hour you have to add in the travel time to get to a pool.
But basically agree with MI, the best exercise is the kind that works for you. I run. At my age, all my joints will be worn out in 20 years anyway Grin

motherinferior · 06/04/2006 15:24

Acqua aerobics has its charms, if you can find a decent teacher.

cod · 06/04/2006 18:16

yes i emasured 1 mile in my car(!) and then run it
tis a loop you see all sorts at 7 15 am
