I sold dp's mobile on ebay today, and the winner has asked me to send it directly to her Son in Africa. I've had an email from Paypal (I hope!) saying that she has paid the money and it has been verified but they will not relelase the money to my paypal account until I provide them with a tracking number for 'international signed for' from the post office. Does that sound right??

I'm also wondering if you can withdraw paypal funds to your credit card or does it have to be a bank account?

DH thinks it's alright b/c if they get the signed for number you get the seller protection. They want that so they can trace it and you can't be accused of not sending. DH says its part of their policy.

charliecat · 26/03/2006 21:41

can i see the item please....theres scams to do with africa..

SleepySuzy · 26/03/2006 21:42

No. Don't do it. It sounds like a scam. Lots of scammers abroad. You won't send it until the funds are clear.

BEWARE.

mumatuks · 26/03/2006 21:43

Sorry to butt in here CC and I know exactly what you are about to say, I nearly said it too, but the transaction has gone through now so the payment is legitamit and is waiting to go in to her account.

SaintGeorge · 26/03/2006 21:44

Transactions can be reversed though, even after you have withdrawn the funds. Paypal would just put your account into an 'overdrawn' situation and start piling on fees.

Don't do it.

mumatuks · 26/03/2006 21:46

ZC only has to worry if they want to pay over (for example) £500 instead of £50 and straight in to her account, by cheque, then they ask for £450 refund saying it was a mistake, you give them the £450, but then the £500 cheque bounces so you are out of pocket and out of goods. If it's done on paypal ZC should be protected!

zephyrcat · 26/03/2006 21:47

Bugger. Really? I thought it looked a bit didgy but haven't really used paypal internationally before. Would anyone mind if I forward someone the email to see what you think?

SleepySuzy · 26/03/2006 21:48

I think if they are asking for it sending to another address they should definately worry. Was the buyer registered in UK?

charliecat · 26/03/2006 21:48

tell us the item number ZC

zephyrcat · 26/03/2006 21:48

Or should I email paypal?

OP posts:
SleepySuzy · 26/03/2006 21:50

Personally I would cancel the transaction, and do a second chance offer. But it's obviously your choice, and depends on the amount of the phone.

SaintGeorge · 26/03/2006 21:50

If the buyer funds her paypal account with a credit card, then you will not get any help from them if the sale goes bad. By posting the phone abroad you will not be sending it to the
registered credit card address.

Whole thing sounds dodgy to me.

mumatuks · 26/03/2006 21:50

Get on to paypal.... sorry it's gone bad for you.

zephyrcat · 26/03/2006 21:51

zephyrcat · 26/03/2006 21:55

Thanks suzy am forwarding it to you now....

OP posts:
mumatuks · 26/03/2006 21:55

oh dear, do no more and get paypal not to allow any money in your account. It's unfortunate it had to be your first sale...

charliecat · 26/03/2006 21:55

Just say your policy is not to ship out of the UK.

SaintGeorge · 26/03/2006 21:55

Ouch, reading that email it is screaming 'SCAM' to me.

Paypal are not the most helpful company on the planet when things go wrong.

Some interesting articles \link{http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money-savers/article.html?in_article_id=407062&in_page_id=5\here} and \link{http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money-savers/article.html?in_article_id=407331&in_page_id=5\here}

Don't post the phone. Report it to Paypal and Ebay so you cover your back against getting a bad rating.
