I've certainly never thought about it..as I've never heard of it Grin

what is it a vegan who only eats from hedgerows or something?

Yorkiegirl · 25/03/2006 20:49

eh? what is a freegan?

busybusybee · 25/03/2006 20:54

I read an article in the Independant a few weeks ago! I confess I had never heard of it before either.

Apparently there are people who call themselves Freegans who go to the bins at the back of places like Tescos, Dixons etc and help themselves to the rubbish!

There is a website too if you fancy joining in :o

If for example in a tray of jam one is cracked they may chuck the whole tray - a freegan then gets a lifetime supply of jam!

Same with for example a stereo if the box is a bit damaged etc.

I couldnt do it myself though - even under the cover of darkness :o

it all sounds a bit waterworld to me..i thought they had alot more arrangements with charity homeless and night shelters now

busybusybee · 25/03/2006 21:17

I dont think Freegans are necessarily homeless - after all a home would be useful to store all the stuff they scavenge:o

Loads of stuff is dumped. I think some steer clear of donations because of possible perceived brand dilution and the implications were anyone to fall ill through a just-out-of-date food item.

Last year I pulled bags upon bags of flowers out of an M&S bin. I'd seen old stock in the shop and asked if I could buy them for a reduced price, and they said no, they have to chuck them, so I went for a rifle. We found hundreds of bunches of gorgeous tulips etc. The house looked amazing. I then found out it was illegal (in theory) as the store owns their waste (ownership transfers to the council after collection I guess). Haven't done it since, LOL.

I wasn't suggesting they were homeless just surprised there was stuff going to waste..I'm sure some of the supermarkets do have contracts with local charity
