... achondroplosia (dwarfism).

The findings were still the same, but with the addition that the growth of the bones has now tailed off, ie they haven't grown as much as they should have since the last scan and so are even more out of proportion than last time.

The head, on the other hand, is quite large. So this fits in with possible achondroplasia.

Consultant said he can't be certain but thinks this is most likely outcome. We were offered another amnio to confirm, but declined - wouldn't want to take the risk of premature labour now. It wouldn't change anything anyway.

To be fair, compared to all the nightmare visions I have had over the last few weeks this diagnosis comes as something of a relief.

But I still need to get my head around it really.

Thanks to all of you who are taking an interest.

And foundintranslation- if you read this, I'm sorry I haven't responded to your lovely e/mail. I'm so crap at the moment, I just haven't got the energy for anything other than the absolute necessities, ie mainly the children. I am very sorry.

Emkana, just remembered a girl I went to high school with. There was never an "official" diagnosis, but I think she did have mild achondroplosia. The thing is, it didn't make any difference whether she did or not. She was lovely, funny, played the flute beautifully and was very popular.

emkana · 26/03/2006 19:01

Thanks jabberwocky

Emkana,

Just to echo what so many others have said,

I'm glad you have a more solid diagnosis and would like to say that baby is very, very lucky to have you as a mother. Your baby is so very loved and in your family his life will be rich, wondeful and full, what beter start could any baby wish for.

Piffle · 26/03/2006 21:07

A relief in many ways Emkana, ano doubt still a shock to you in others
FWIW I know a couple, who oth have dwarfism, they have 3 kids, twon boys and a girl
The girl is Nt the twin boys have it, but are the most cheeky, clever, and charming lads EVER and very popular in school
There was also a documentary on some time ago about kids and their wa a little lad caled Alistair who had it and moved to New Zealand - he was the most gorgeous child - I think the way in which you've handled this is entire enormously stressful situation is an inspiration, you are a remarkable mother :)
I hope you're ok this evening.
Blessings to count perhaps and more questions, more questions.
Hugs xxxxxxx

Hi Emkana

Glad the potential diagnosis isn't quite as severe as orginally thought. But still a lot to take in, obviously. To add to the other stories here of successful people with this condition, I think you can add Andy Hamilton - very successful comedian and scriptwriter. One of the guys who wrote Drop the Dead Donkey.

emkana · 26/03/2006 21:19

Thank you all.

I just pray to God that this is it now and that they don't spring any more nasty surprises on us what else it could be.

Andy Hamilton has achondroplasia? I never knew that edam, I thought he had a brittle bone-type disorder. He once kept all of us sane and laughing when the London Eye stopped for 40 minutes with us (dh, me, toddler ds, grumpy parents, some Egyptian tourists in rain ponchos and AH and HIS mum and dad) all in one pod. Top guy.
