Has anyone else read this incredible, magical book? For the first time since becoming a mum - so nearly four years - I was able to disappear completely into another world. Just stunning. Please God let no-one other than Peter Jackson be allowed near it.

Willow2 ... agree wholeheartedly!

I read the trilogy when DS was a baby ... I loved it ... total fantasy ... right up my street ... and completely put Harry Potter in the shade IMO ... in fact, you can't compare them although people do!
I so want a daemon of my own!!!

yes, agree totally willow2. I read the books over a year ago and they are still wedged in my mind. Has anyone seen the play, yet?

willow2 · 30/12/2003 09:37

I want a daemon too.

Got the trilogy for Xmas and am now in the middle of book 3. Dh and dd are away tonight so I am going to curl up in bed and wallow. Far too good for children though.

My daemon would be a guinea pig

slug · 30/12/2003 10:32

Dh bought me the trilogy for Xmas. I've already read the first two and am having to restrict myself to reading the last one on the train going to work, otherwise it would be all over too soon.

Cried (on a train....!) whilst reading Book 2.....!
Best thing I had read in years...

StuffedDragon · 30/12/2003 15:11

I got tickets for the play for Christmas. Not seeing it until Feb/March though

Well I finished book 3 last night and I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Not been so affected by a book for a long time. Of course it could just be those pregnancy hormones.
Having read an article about them I was worried about how he was going to portray the "grown up" bit, but thought it was very well done and not at all too specific for a kids book.

wilbur · 31/12/2003 09:59

maryz - the second and third books have a boy as hero too, although Lyra is equal to him. There is lots of action in the thrid as well. Maybe your boys could start with the second, they wouldn't be totally lost I don't think, and that might get them hooked enough to read the first. I've just finished the last book - brilliant, brilliant. I had tickets to the National Theatre production before Xmas but it was cancelled due to a fire risk! Will book again in the New Year. BTW the film version screenplay is being written by Tom Stoppard. Should be wonderful.

nerdgirl · 31/12/2003 10:30

Completely agree. Loved these books, particularly the first. And cried my eyes out at the end.

Tinker · 31/12/2003 11:50

Got the first book for Christmas, not started it yet and not my type of book but I did ask for it. Was intrigued after reading an interview with him and there were quotes from a Christian Teachers Association bloke saying that they shouldn't be taught in schools without guidance???!!!

tabitha · 31/12/2003 11:56

Just found out that Phillip Pullman is in New Years Honours List - don't know what he got though.
Didn't know about the play of the books - would love to see it - has anyone got any more details about, e.g. What it's called; Is it only in London etc.
Thanks
