Calling all Essex girls... Where to live???

Hiya

We've just sold our central London flat (yippee!) and want to live somewhere near Colchester to let DH get into London and me get to my parents in Suffolk. But we don't know the area. I really want a village or v small town, have visited, and liked, West Bergholt and Coggeshall, but need to find more good places to live. Kelvedon seemed a bit bleak on first visit (happy to be proved wrong!) and what about Great Horkesley?

Any thoughts? Comments, positive or otherwise, about these and other villages would be priceless.

Thanks!

xx

No 29 looks nice too. Shame you missed it. Still with your budget you should be fine. As I said speak to ALL the estate agents. There is new stuff that isn't on rightmove

AllBuggiedOut · 24/03/2006 20:18

Thanks Crunchie, I will. I thought they'd be bending over backwards to stay in touch and show us places because we've got a cash buyer but no, there are obviously plenty of buyers out there so they don't need to move their butts! Sorry, feeling a bit pissed off with estate agents today Angry

Your dream home obviously isn't on with Boydens now, but do let me know if you spot a new for sale sign appearing!

I don't know who it is on with, but I defineatly saw it in the paper last week. Call them all up and see if they have the 4 bed cottage near the A12 on the colchester road. There is no for sale sign, I looked today!! I could of course put a note through their letter box for you!

crunchie · 24/03/2006 23:28

OK, done some searchin and it is being sold by Roy Chapman & sons 01206 262244

I have found it on their website, but there is no direct link to the house. \link{http://www.roychapman.co.uk\here}

It is a 4 bed at £347,500. I found it by searching their site for a cottage. Like I siad itr looks good from teh outside and the pics inside. The ONLY downside I decided was the closeness to the A12, so you do get traffic noise. It is basically just over the bridge from teh a12 on the left hand side. It is 3/4 mile to walk to the school and shops (pavements all the way) Bus stop about 100 yrds away. Might be worth getting details if you want to.

AllBuggiedOut · 26/03/2006 23:05

Bless you Crunchie! I haven't called the agent yet, but did do some driving around today and didn't spot the house. Either the board had fallen down or it's not where I thought... But will give them a call!

Jen - we drove round East Bergholt today and thought it looked lovely. Also checked out Dedham (pricey as you say!). And suspect I'm not arty enough for Wivenhoe...

I'd still really welcome anything you learn from your friend about Langham.

Thanks ladies, you're all being really helpful!

There's no board up, that's why it is difficult to see where it is. Basically if you come over the A12 from the station it is the 2nd house into the village. It is a peachy colour, set back from the road (you turn left into a slip road and it is behind some trees)

Anyway, call the agent, let me know what it's like. I'll keep my eyes peeled, but you do need to be calling ALL the time. I would love a nosy at the house bh, but DH thinks I'm mad/rude as we have no inetention to move!!!

crunchie · 26/03/2006 23:22

You must have driven past my house too :) I am opposite the Trble Tile pretty much (on the main road) facing the field :)

Jen1209 · 27/03/2006 20:11

Oooh Crunchie - I know where you are! The Treble Tile is my 2nd fave pub EVER!!! I love the food in there - hasn't it recently changed hands though?

AllBuggiedout - I was in Langham on Friday night and as yet, there are no plans to move the site in. However, it is still under discussion but I am sure the residents of Langham will put up a huge fight. That sort of thing just isn't cricket in Langham I'm afraid!

East Bergholt is nice too - it has primary & secondary schools although I'm not sure how you're DH would get on with the travel to London - he would prob have to go to Manningtree...

crunchie · 27/03/2006 20:35

It has changed hands, last summer and I am sorry I don't think it is as good. When it first opened as a foodie pub I helped paint it!! Henry the old owner is a friend of ours, he now has a pub near sudbury which is great.

(I am next to the 2CV Man, by the bus-stop!)

Georgiesmum · 27/03/2006 21:29

I comefrom South Ockendon and I must say its a lovely place to live (however I havent lived there for years now!)

Jen1209 · 28/04/2006 18:40

All buggied out - so sorry this has taken so long and I hope you spot this but there shouldn't be anything to worry about in Langham. The planned site is on the edge of some land owned by my friend's parents friends (?) and they are fighting it tooth and nail. THere is also speculation about there being some rare breed of frog down there so that will call a halt to things!

Hope this helps, sorry again for the lateness.
