Clothes for gymnastics

DD goes to a junior gym class, and they've started running adult classes. I quite fancy it, so I picked up the flyer. What's putting me off though is that they insist all participants wear a leotard! Not sure the world is ready for the sight of me in a skin-tight bit of lycra, and the wobbly cellulite round my bum could really put people off their food. Any suggestions how I could get round this problem?!

Ask if you could wear a pair of lycra shorts and a baggy-ish sweat shirt over the top. I wish my ds's gymnastics ran adult classes, I'd be there in a shot!

They don't let the juniors wear sweatshirts (something about observing the line of the body) so I'm not too hopeful. I'll give them a call in a few minutes and ask.

just spoken to them on the phone. They were just a bit difficult really. I explained that I didn't have a leotard and really didn't want to buy one as I wasn't sure I'd like the class. I asked if I could wear shorts and a t-shirt or sweatshirt. The woman on the phone said I could wear shorts "if I had to", as long as they are very short and tight-fitting. She said that a t-shirt or sweatshirt would be too baggy, and suggested I could wear a vest top or sports bra! Yeah right!

kids at dd's class wear shorts - non clingy ones - and a tshirt tucked in. Can't see why this would be wrong for adults? Suggest you wear something not too tight if you aren't happy with that...I am sure they won't expell you from the class Smile
hope you like it - you are very brave!

This is bizarre! There's an adult gym class nearish to me and when I went there was no stipulation at all on what to wear! I guess for gym they are thinking health and safety and baggy clothes can catch on equipment, or on your own limbs when doing forward rolls, etc. However for the first lesson you are hardly going to be doing somersaults off the beam so they're being odd really.

If it were me I'd play the innocent and turn up for the first class in what you feel comfortable in, though I would make sure it wasn't ridiculously baggy. You may find that if all shapes and sizes wear leotards you feel ok with it?

The other thing thought of was that there's unlikely to be competition as such so as the class would appear to be for fitness or just fun, it seems a bit strict to say thou shalt wear a leotard.
The coaches at the class DS does all wear track pants and sweatshirts. Surely better to find out if you like the class before having to go shell out on the leotard. I would also imagine for the first little while they would have you doing really basic stuff like rolls and things so don't see the need for a tight outfit to show lines.

fair points all. I'll just turn up wearing what I'm comfortable in! I'm going this afternoon, so I'll let you all know what happens.

Just got home after the first lesson! I just didn't have the confidence to get and wear a leotard, but I was pretty concerned what reaction I'd get if I wore anything TOO baggy. So I went along in track suit trousers with my old gym shorts underneath, and a fairly tight t-shirt. I binned my trousers and trainers in the changing room and went through into the gym itself, where almost everyone there was wearing a bloody leotard!

After introducing myself etc the class instructor asked me to take my socks off, so I scooted to the side of the gym and dumped them, them tiptoed back to the middle feeling liek a schoolgirl who forgot her plimsolls! Once the lesson got going I really enjoyed it to be honest.

At the end the teacher approached me and before she had the chance I explained why I was wearing what I was. She said that she prefers everyone in a leotard, but suggested that I could wear a swimming costume next week if I don't want to shell out just yet. Then she went off to talk to someone else before I could say anyting else to her!
