URGENT HELP TO IDENTIFY PLANT DS HAS JUST EATEN

CHICagoMUM · 21/03/2006 10:28

Ds has just ripped off a leaf from a plant and conssumed half of it. There is no label in the pot to identify it and I need to know if it is poisonous.

It has ovalish shaped leaves which have light and dark green stripes and the underside is burgundy - any idea, or ideas where I could find out?

is it a house plant?

WideWebWitch · 21/03/2006 10:30

Photograph it and post in member profiles? It's unlikely surely if it's a house plant?

spacecadet · 21/03/2006 10:31

yes take a pic and post it.

CHICagoMUM · 21/03/2006 10:32

Have tried to post pictures before but can't shrink the photos. It is a house plant.

the only one that you really have to be careful with is the plant known as "mother in laws tongue" which looks similiar to a peace lily and has sap which is irritant.

Hallgerda · 21/03/2006 10:33

Is it one of \link{http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week123.shtml\these?}.

Kew offer a 'poisonous plants' identification hotline:
"During weekday office hours we do provide a telephone advice service concerning toxicity of plants and fungi. If you have an urgent enquiry, please telephone Kew's central phone line at 020 8332 5000, stating whether the enquiry concerns a plant or a fungus (mushroom/toadstool). "

It may be worth taking him & the plant to a& e if you are really worried. If it is any comfort, poisonous plants usually taste bitter to deter animals ect from eating them,so if he ate half of it,it can't be that bad.

CHICagoMUM · 21/03/2006 10:40

It's on this page \link{http://www.houseofplants.co.uk/\the picture on the left with 2 dark grey pots}

stromanthe triostar or peacock plant if it is the same as my link, it doesn't say it is poisonous..you could ask the crocus people

galaxy · 21/03/2006 10:42

When you hold the mouse over that pic, it says citrus if that's any use!

If you aren't in England i'll ring it for you if you want?

CHICagoMUM · 21/03/2006 11:05

Thanks Blu (I somehow missed the original post). Have phoned them and they checked - its not listed as poisonous and they have recommended I keep an eye on him for a couple of hours to see if there are any signs. Thanks for your help. I've now removed that plant from his reach and am going to do like wise with all the others around the house now.

the zebera plant can be midly toxic if eaten, ring the number blu gave you, keep an eye on your lo, i think the worst case scenario is that your ds may just vomit, if your ds seems at all unwell, take him straight to a&e.in the meantime give him plenty of fluids.

spacecadet · 21/03/2006 11:08

thats a relief for you!, why do children always want to eat inedible things, dont worry about me saying mildly toxic, it just means can cause some vomiting, but not poisonous!
