Trying to write my CV but struggling, any other academics out there who can help me write the teaching part?

How do i phrase that i've taught a couple of lectures off of a course!

I always put the number of contact-hours involved when talking about teaching. So if it's a whole module it'll be something like:

20-credit module on 'Mumsnet and how to enjoy it' (20 hours)

And if just a contribution to a module:

Two lectures on 'Chat' and 'Other-subjects' as part of a 20-credit moduleon 'Mumsnetand how to enjoy it' (2 hours)

Does this help, or not the kind of thing you mean?

katzg · 20/03/2006 20:30

thats the sort of thing - thanks

last year i gave a 2x 1 hour lecture on X as part of a 10 credit / 20 hour course but this year i only did 1

Just got to work out how to put all the helping of students that i do but get no offical recognition for!

It my first go at it and i'm applying for a lectureship

For the general helping of students, I'd put it under 'Admin', with the heading 'student support' and then list the kinds of things you've done (everything that isn't teaching/marking). Also, since that sort of thing isn't easily quantifiable, make sure that you've briefed at least one of your referees (the most reliable) to include it in their reference.

Good luck with the application.

i was going to put a heading of reseach supervision, since i have supervised numerous students in the lab! does that sound ok?

And then list all th students i have helped so

PhD student - Chatting on Mumsnet - helped with navigating the website, starting threads and posting on existing threads

I think it's fine to put stuff about helping supervise students in the lab. I would say it's also very important to stress any input you had into designing the project, helping them with comments on their write-ups and so on. Anything more than a technician would do for supervision, in other words. For lectures I would be inclined to say that you were asked to contribute to x course, so you came up with a lecture on Y which you have delivered for the last two years. Contact hours are, I think, maybe less significant with science than with Arts subjects, simply because the teaching load is often much less. Anything that suggests any degree of creativity with your teaching is good, and good point about priming your referees!

thanks

i'm in quite a good position as my referees are on the interview pannel

Yes, that does sound good :) Grant getting potential will probably be very high on their list- have you helped write any?

katzg · 20/03/2006 21:09

i've got 2 grants that i put on my RAE form, i am the named postdoc on each so apparently i can put them down! not sure how to do it! guess a heading of GRANTS!

OP posts:
tamum · 20/03/2006 21:11

Were you involved in writing them? If so, I would stress that- I have several grants with named postdocs on, but the postdocs didn't actually take part in writing them, so you will need to make it clear if you did, I think.

katzg · 20/03/2006 21:25

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

sorry - my RAE form won't cut and paste nicely! i helped to write one of them!

i also helped to write a patent application not sure where that should go

OP posts:
tamum · 20/03/2006 21:28

I would just group it all under research probably, with separate headings for teaching stuff. Definitely stress the writing, and the patent application. Is it an internal job?

katzg · 20/03/2006 21:31

well there are 2 jobs one has been advertised closing date 23rd and the other is to be advertised, both at same uni, the one not yet advertised same department as i am now in!

This is my first go at applying for a lectureship, have been postdocing for 3 years which i guess isn't really long enough but the jobs are there now!

OP posts:
tamum · 20/03/2006 21:34

I went straight to a lectureship after one 3 year postdoc. It's a bit challenging, but as you say, if the jobs are there now! It would be mad not to try, given how often academic posts come up in the right area (i.e. virtually never). Good luck :)

katzg · 20/03/2006 21:38

thanks - that fills me with a bit more confidence! must just get it done now!

thankfully my boss has said he will have a quick look! but i have kinda left it til the last minute!
