People come from different circumstances, i would love to be on the pta but i'm not paying a babysitter so i can go.

GDG · 20/03/2006 18:29

I don't know, I guess there would be very 'deserving' cases and therefore it's a great idea. However, I can't help thinking there'll be some parents who just see it as extra childcare and 'hurrah, another thing I don't have to deal with' and that's very sad.

indeed - it's always the same people at the meetings and at the events and there on a Saturday painting the school fencing, or tidying the garden, meeting and greeting school visitors.....

of course there are some parents that can't do it but at our school, some of them just go on about how busy they are. I find it insulting personally as I'm grappling with 3 small kids in teh playground - I'm not busy am I not?

Feistybird · 20/03/2006 18:31

If it's a homework club than presumably it's out of school time (??) If so, then you're not taking anything off the other kids. In fact I would rather this than those 'needier'kids having to get extra help in class.

cod · 20/03/2006 18:31

Feistybird · 20/03/2006 18:33

Surely these flakey parents are in a very small minority....? they are in our school.

Our pta is run by idiots who are lonely and try and find company wherever they can. I cannot believe the ideas they come up with and would love to be at a meeting so i could tell them all to get a grip. Most of them don't value education they are just severly lacking in social skills and are desperate to share their mouldy home made lemon curd. One of them asked me the other day if Island was attatched to Britain.
Yes i do come from a fine area, i have just managed to hit upon a school full of inbreds.

GDG · 20/03/2006 18:33

I'm sounding selfish here probably - I'm not, but I don't want to be taken advantage of by parents high-flying it while I do their kids homework and then go home and spend until 11pm workig in the office.

I worked in a library once where they ran a homework club. It was brilliant - inroduced the kids to the library system and also we had laods of time to help the kids. We were getting paid obviously so didn't resent the time.

not an Ireland?

OP posts:

I think the point is that the parents are the ones who can't won't help (for whatever reason, and whatever degree of blame you want to attach) but the children suffer.
my parents never came to parents evening or helped me with hoemwork.
they were working (well my mum was)
they weren't educated enough
they didn't care
perm and two from three
I would have liked a homework club actually. as it was I used to lurk in the library for as long as I could.

cod · 20/03/2006 18:38
