How do I dye my hair without............

....dying everything else within 100m ?!

Last time I dyed my hair (which was the 1st time in about 8 years) I almost ruined our beautiful roll-top bath that we had re-enamelled a few years ago. Luckily it came off after much swearing (by DP) and lots of bleach.

I can't dye it over the bathroom sink as thats an old one that I can imagine would be ruined by the dye getting into the fine cracks that are in the glaze due to its age. If I do it in the shower the grouting will be ruined.

Is there such a thing as a dye that won't ruin your bathroom?

What does everyone else do?

wot about kitchen sink
I once dyed my hair purple and rinsed it off in the shower
i went like a blueberryGrin

ATM we have a normal acrylic bath and the dye just rinses off pretty easily. Do you have to use a permanent dye ? Maybe one of the tint type ones (20 washes or whatever) aren't so strong ?

zippitippitoes · 20/03/2006 10:24

go to hairdressers Grin

BettySpaghetti · 20/03/2006 10:25

LOL at DSW looking like a blueberry!! Kitchen sink is a possibility although I can imagine it being a bit awkward.

NDP - I would imagine that the colour could stain regardless? I'm not sure.

I think our baths in the past were plastic hence no problem all those years ago

It may well just be cheaper and less hassle in the long rub to have it done at the hairdressers, as zippi says

BettySpaghetti · 20/03/2006 10:28

Re;hairdressers -Can't be arsed to spend that sort of money really -I don't want fancy streaks or anything, just fancy covering up the white hairs that are coming through Blush

How much would it be do you think? Never had colour done before

It depends on where you have it done, eg having it done at Tony and Guy will be around 50% more than the cost of having it done at the local 'granny' salon, but the results will prob be the same for a solid single all over colour. I'd guess at paying £45 at T&G or other 'branded' salon, or £25 - £30 for it at a local place.

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 10:33

don't forget that you'll prob only have to pay ful whack every 12 or so weeks, as you'll only be paying for cheaper root touch ups inbetween

Thing is, I don't want to get into that trap of having to have it re-done every x weeks -I'm bad enough at having it cut regularly as its a hassle getting an appt. when DP is around to have the kids etc.

PS -NDP, no looking for my white hairs on Friday night to check if I've done it or not!! Wink

Try Casting by Loreal (not permanent, but covers greay really well - I am about 40% greay and it workds like a charm) - really easy application - and slowly fades so no visible growing out line issues - you can the decide what you want to do after 12 or 18 washes or whatever it is, Use a dark-coloured towel around your shoulders and if you do ger any of the dye on your skin, ears or face , then just dab it with a cotton bud dipped in shampoo or baby oil - Works for me bacause I too can't be bothered to have to maintain every 4 weeks .

zazas · 20/03/2006 11:56

BettySgaghetti I know what you mean - my recent dying attempt has seen the stuff stain the outside of the bath, the floor / shower curtain / clothes basket / bathroom cabinet and newly pained wall. I have tried to do it over the sink and in the shower and it just goes everywhere! I think I must shake my head at some point for it to spray so far. The only thing I don't cover very well is my actual hair! I am thinking of attempting it outside with a bucket when it warms up!

Norah · 20/03/2006 12:24

Oh - have never had this problem !

I use ones that go on dirty dry hair - like Belle Colour - you apply them and lather them up - then I stick an embarassing old bath cap on - have also used cling film in past - and sit on bed reading mags for 20mins - then get in shower and rinse it all off !! Have had the occassional drip on floor - but wipes straight up ! Have loads of grouting in my shower as it's got mosaic tiling - but have never stained it !!

BettySpaghetti · 20/03/2006 12:30

Thanks for these tips -glad I'm not the only one zazas Smile

Belle Colour sounds interesting especially if it doesn't stain the grouting (or turn your entire body a bizarre colour -although maybe it would be the equivalent of coloured hair and a StTropez in one Wink)

Just remember to take off your T-shirt before you dye - otherwise you will ruin it taking it off to go in shower ! I usually do it in dressing gown if it's too cold to be just in bra !

Don't know what you guys are up to splashing it all around like this !!

BettySpaghetti · 20/03/2006 12:38

Its not so much splashing. Last time I was applying it leaning over the bath to get to the hair underneath and got loads of drips in the bath (they were the ones that needed bleach and elbow grease to get out).

Then of course I was panicking about rinsing it off because of the amount of dye that would come out with the first rinse. Nightmare!

I absolutely am unable to dye my hair without getting it somewhere it shouldn't be. Last time it ended up on the (new) white bathroom blinds. At the very top! WTF?? The only option if you don't want to spend a fortune at the hairdressers is to apply it very, very s-l-o-w-l-y in order to at least minimise the risk..
