My son is 8 and been begging for years to have a tv in his room as all his friends have for years.

I was adamant not to let him as long as I could, but now I'm starting to sway, maybe I should let him now.
Just wondered what sort of ages others let their kids have them. Thanks

When they have left home.

We haven't ever had tvs in bedrooms. At 15 they have had own laptops and watch some I player etc but that's all.

However we don't really watch a lot if tv anyway. Too busy as a whole.

They do however have radios and listen for hours. This has had slightly snorksome moments as particularly the younger 2 ( now 13 16) have listened to huge amounts of radio 7 4extra. Hence " no you cannot stay up to hear who the murderer is (in a poirot ) because you are 9 and should be asleep! " or DS being just a tad irritating in English in year 7 because knows huge chunks of Sherlock Holmes off by heart.

I recommend the radio!

Mid teens (ish) maybe.

My two (12 and 8) have started asking for one because friends have recently had one but we've said no.

TBH DD watches enough crap on TV as it is -she would watch reruns of Come Dine With Me, Cupcake Wars or Emergency Bikers until the cows come home so I have visions of her never sleeping again and watching TV all night instead.

We have a TV in our bedroom that is very rarely watched so sometimes they get to go and watch something in there if there is a dispute over the main TV (normally due to DP wanting to watch the football!)

Love the "what if thy wanted to read books way into the night would that be ok" ?

It wouldn't , but because it's silent you'd probably not know. Surely everyone has caught them with torches at 11pm?

My sneaky dd2 was recently caught with and earphone wire fed down the back of her high sleeper to the radio on the shelf below !

That's what I mean Theas. Silent reading of books/listening to Ipods/radios everyone is blissfully unaware that their child has had no sleep. Grin

Not like the evil that is TV.

shrimponastick · 15/09/2012 11:00

DS had a tv/video combo at six. He didn't watch tv excessively, and always switched off when told to

He is now 14 and rarely watches tv. He does spend rather too much time on his laptop when at home though..

He does read, and when there is no electronic diversion gets through books at a rate of knots.

I have no issue with DC having tv in their rooms . In fact am Jealous as me and DH are the only bedroom without..

DilysPrice · 15/09/2012 11:00

University age- it's a health hazard. We have 4 TVs in the house, but none in our bedrooms.

TheCunningStunt · 15/09/2012 11:01

My 5&3 year old both have a tv and DVD player on their bedrooms. So they can only watch DVDs. I have no issue with it at all. It's like everything else in life, you use it in moderation. You are in control of it. Mine ask to watch a DVD, I say yes or no. It's not a big deal, they do not stay up all night watching it, it does not effect sleep. In fact DS tries to stay up reading every night, perhaps I should bam his bookcase from his room?

Op do what is best for you...it's no one else's business.

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2012 12:29

What's your decision then OP? Grin

Japple · 15/09/2012 12:37

While in the 4th Grade,we told our 2 children...You must Earn the right to have
A TV in your rooms. We required A's and B's on their School Report Cards,Clean
Bedrooms, and all Chores completed and "Checked Off" on the Bulletin Board.
They complied. They Earned the Right to have their own TVs.Now,at ages 39
and 40...One is a Banker,and the other is a Corporate Computer Specialist.They
raised Their children the Same way we raised Them.Jill.

Thanks for all the comments !!
Was quite shocked to see so many anti tv comments! Expected a few of course! But maybe not that many!!! [wink
I'm still undecided.
My son loves reading and both my children have stories read to them every night before bed.this tv for the room would NEvER be on at bed time and there would be very strict rules.
Lol I still can't decide . Xxx

DS1 got one for his 13th birthday. Not having a large house with dining rooms, play rooms or spare rooms for them to use, the DSs bedroom is their living room and private space. I quite like having some child free time with DH in the evenings, so them watching Man Vs Food or whatever in their room is quite nice. We've never had any issues with watching it past lights off because they know I'd hear it and if I can't trust them, they'd lose it. It's also nice that if they're hogging the main TV playing games (no consoles in bedrooms!) DD can go and watch a DVD in their room.
