I've got to help my children make one each. Gah!

Anyone fancy sharing ideas here?

I have NO IDEAS at the moment.

I do not look forward to the Easter bonnet parade, as not only do I have to make a bonnet for DS, but I also have to make one for myself!Blush (I work in the school)
Last year I made DS quite a simple one. I just made a cardboard band, stuck on an eggshell (cracked open) & made a little chick to pop inside it.

Oh sigh, you've both just reminded me that we've got to do them too!
Am very tempted to get them to wear last year's creations again. Do you think that's allowed?
Ds1 did a very good hot-cross bun once, now I remember it. Just painted a (square) box brown, painted a white cross on it and then plopped black dots on top. Made head hole. Done!

Julia am sure you can recyle (in fact that's v Green of you)

This is my first year of having to do it. DD wants a nest with chicks in. That shouldn't be too hard, right? Ds is 'still deciding' (trying to shoehorn a star wars theme into a bonnet more like).

Do you have a shredder, puddle? Makes v good 'straw' for nest...
Yes, know what you mean about Star Wards etc. Ds2 very miffed at me veto-ing Harry Potter hat - didn't think wizardry at Easter would go down too well in his terribly po-faced C of E school.
Do yours have to parade around in their hats in front of the parents? Ours do. All very 50s vicarage tea party Grin

Thanks Hausfrau Grin
Can't help you with your cake though Wink

No we don't have a shredder. But dp is art teacher and currently has a stash of bendy wood in house (from making benders with students...don't ask...)Am thinking it's good nest material.

The bonnets are for school easter hop. No parade as far as I know, but I qute like the retro nature of the whole exercise - all good clean fun.

My mum's mum used to be easter bonnet queen and make us ones so we always won Grin I seem to have inherited this trait as my DD has a fab one and made two for nieces easter bonnet parades too.
Got bits from hobby craft- bonnets were £1.49 which I thought was v.v. reasonable for them and added own pom pom made chicks with 'googly' eyes yellow ribbon.
Blew some eggs and hand painted them in halves and stuck them on.
Put lots of tissue paper flowers and leaves round too, to make it look more spring-y.
Really chuffed with the result. And found loads of goodies I forgot we had in our craft box!

buy some coconut matting that is used in hanging basket
stick matting around cheap plastic hat (party shop)to look like a nest
stick small twigs and greenery around the bits of plastic hat
used yellow shredded tissue paper(or similar)to line the nest
place a selection of small eggs(or make pretend ones)inside the nest
place fluffy easter chick on top of eggs
hat made Grin

Right I made DS one with a nest on. I stapled together a band of card to fit round his head. Then DH made a brim. I covered it all in yellow tissue paper. Then I cut up rafia to make straw and stuck that on the top along with some mini eggs and those little chicks you can buy. Also printed off some Easter egg shapes from the net somewhere and DS decorated them with felt tips and glitter to go round the side.

Last year for DD's I acquired a white straw hat with ribbon on from when we were clearing my Great Aunt's house. I then went to the pound shop and bought two bunches of artificial flowers (think it was 2 for £1). I then got the wire cutters and cut each individual flower off with a bit of stalk and stuck it through the ribbon. Was dead easy and quite effective. I got some wadding and sewed it round inside the hat to make it fit DD's head (she was only 11 months at the time). You could get hold of a straw hat at a charity shop probably.
