Do you buy gifts for your mum on Mother's Day or just send a card?

In the past 2 days I've had e-mails from Bridgewater, Kew, Plumo, M&S and even White Stuff, each assuring me that they had the perfect gift for Mother's Day.
In the past I have sent flowers and maybe a small present but this year I was just going to send a card (with heartfelt message) - not because of any ill will, just because I don't feel like shelling out loads of money on it. It's her birthday in May and I'd rather spend money on her then.
Am I in a minority? What are you doing?

Mine demands a gift... actually no, she demands a card, reminds me every few days for the whole of March, and then pouts and flounces around if I don't get her a gift, or if the gift wasn't expensive enough, or if the card wasn't to her liking, and she gets antsy if the gift was too expensive...

so every mother's day I get a bloody earful.

I just want a kiss and a hug me!

I hope I'm not like that in the future...

card and a bunch of daffodils, a tradition since we were small (then again it is her birthday and wedding anniversary at the end of March too!)

Oh this is a bug bear of mine. I am sending my mum and dh's mum a scarf each (2 for £10 in Tie Rack) and a card. In the past I have forked out up to £50 between them for flowers. I will be happy with the home-made card my dd makes at school

kipper22 · 17/03/2006 14:10

a card and a small pressie (chocs?) but have always bought similar for my nan too. concerned that means this year will get out of hand - card from me to mum and nan then suppose ds should send one to HIS nan so then should he send one to his great nan? how about grandparrents and great-grandparents on dh's side - don't want any jealousy now do we?!!! {frazzled face!}
only hope i get a lovely card and breakfast in bed for my 1st mothers day (i can but dream...)

My mum spent our entire childhoods telling us she only wanted a kiss and a hug so I hope that hasn't changed since we left home. I feel a bit bad that since having the children Mother's Day has become my day and we rarely travel over to see her then anymore.

In my family we do a card gift/floweres and go out for lunch.

I also buy myself something form DD, as i know she would want me to have something Grin

alexsmum · 17/03/2006 14:20

i always buy my mum a present and a card, and dh usually gets his mum a card and dh gets me a pressie and a card from the boys!

Tommy · 17/03/2006 14:28

only send a card - have already bought it. It says "Happy Mothers Day" - I think that will suffice Grin
Can't bear these gushy things about how you're the best Mum in the world and all that stuff

Lio · 17/03/2006 14:29

Neither – my mum believes it's a big marketing scan. Sorry, less than helpful (although great for me!)

littlerach · 17/03/2006 14:52

Always get her a plant.

Hope that I will get a homemade one from dds this year, much nicer than Clintons ones.

brimfull · 17/03/2006 14:57

I always send my mum flowers and a card as don't see her much, she lives in Canada.

Uwila · 17/03/2006 14:58

Will send extra nice flowers this year since I ran out of money at Christmas, and she got stiffed then.

But, my mum is American. So, I have until May to organise it.

JoolsToo · 17/03/2006 15:00

yes I do but think mother's day is one big marketing ploy and don't really agree with it. Always tell my dc not spend their hard earned cash on me, (they don't always listen Smile - although I do like a card!

puddle · 17/03/2006 15:00

I always send a card and if we are at hers or if she is here we go out for lunch on the day. If we are at her house I get flowers but never send them.
