My baby is due in 7 weeks and I am starting to get things ready and I want to makesureI have enought vests and little outfits for the early days. I am going to buy neutrals ie cream, white, lemon etc but do you think I should stick to newborn sizes? My first baby was 8lb 8oz and as we were told she was going to be big we bought 0-3 so dh had to ruch out and buy newborn things to fit her. I can't see this one being huge eg 9lb plus so shall I be safe and stick to newborn to start with?

I had a few newborn things, then the majority in 0-3. In the end I didn't really need the newborn stuff, principally because ds was in washable nappies so they didn't fit over his huge bum!

You could always get a few newborn things, but only get out and wash a couple of outfits, then if the baby is too big for them you can take the rest back and exchange them for the next size up.

i was big throughout my pg and DD was 9lb 1oz.... i never thought of buying a newborn size as i stuck to the age 0 - 3 mths sizes

its better having the clothes abit too big on baby than being too small

colditz · 15/03/2006 11:03

If I were you (and I have this dillema myself so this is what I am doing) I would get a few newborn little bits, some very basic stuff for the first few weeks, but buy the bulk of the first clothes in 0-3. My ds was 8lb 7 oz, so I am a bit stuck myself, expecting a 9lb ish baby

biglips · 15/03/2006 11:04

or buy a few newborns bodysuit and sleepsuits (10) and a few 0 - 3 mths (10) - just in case

if the newborns doesnt fit... take them back and get money refunded

lucy5 · 15/03/2006 11:05

Also remember that you will probably be inudated with gifts at new born size. My dd was atiddler and we still still didnt get through all the newborn stuff, she outgrew it very quickly.

lucy5 · 15/03/2006 11:05

oops, inundated.

emmawill · 15/03/2006 11:06

My 1st was only 7lb 1oz and was tiny even in newborn cloths, so we got lots of newborn born and 0-3months for my 2nd. He weighed 9lb 3oz and never worn most of the newborn and is even out of most of the 0-3 months he's 6 weeks old tomorrow and wears mainly 3-6 months!

Diffcuilt isn't it? Mainly get a few of a few sizes then get most of their cloths when born and you know what size you need to buy.

Best of luck with the birth. Smile

I never bought any newborn clothes everything was 0-3 except for one pack of vests. Dd turned out to be 7lbs and only put on 1lb a month so she spent the first three months in about 2 outfits until she grew into her 0-3. She's never changed either just tried some 18-24 month trousers on her and they fell off, shes nearly 2 and a half.
Why not wait till a couple of weeks before and buy some newborn stuff and you can always take it back if you don't find you need it.

Yorkiegirl · 15/03/2006 11:18

I can always go and get you more newborn stuff if you don't have enough helsi!

yackertyyack · 15/03/2006 11:18

....if you are buying NEXT stuff it seems to come up big so I would personally go for Newborn. I bought lots of Newborn for my little man - who arrived weighing a whopping 4lb so we had to go and buy tiny baby stuff and by the time he fitted the newborn the season had changed and it was no longer practical!! Also, as some one mentioned....people LOVE buying you Newborn clothes as they look so cute....so maybe get some 0-3 as well - just keep the reciepts.

Good idea to pack your bag early.....i didn't and was rushed in and DH had to pack it!!! I ended up with sexy thongs and a brand new white fluffy towel (go for an old dark colour!)......bless him!!!

helsi · 15/03/2006 11:57

thanks all - not nuying much new to be honest. am getting some good deals on e-bay at the moment. Typically i sold most of my stuff after dd was born as didn't plan on anymore at the time then changed my mind after it had all gone!

Helsi.....Blush sorry only just realised that you are on your second...didn't mean to patronise you when I said about the towel!! (just wish someone had told DH)! Sorry!

helsi · 15/03/2006 12:12

thats ok YY I should know really but my mind is just blank from last time as it was all such a blur to me.

DS was 9 lb 10 oz but all the 0-3 month stuff (except the hats) drowned him. Far too long in the arms and legs. So I would buy v. cheap (eg Asda) vest and babygros. Two packs of each should be plenty. With DD I kept all that was OK of DS's and just bought one new pack of vests and one of babygros totalling about £5. Was more than enough. Also had some white knitted cardigans left from DS which were invaluable for a May baby when a coat would have been too much. Cardigans much less bulky on a tiny newborn than a coat.

Nemo1977 · 15/03/2006 12:18

Helsi dont know if you are interested but I have a load of newborn vests and sleepsuits in unisex colours willing to sell for £5 plus postage. They did for DS who was 9lb1oz. Think most of them go up to 11lbs.

Nemo1977 · 15/03/2006 12:19

Also meant to add that I was told DD would be 10lb plus because of DS size and she was a dinky 6lb 14ozs.

helsi · 15/03/2006 13:03

ooh Nemo that would be great if you are sure. Vests are what I am short of at the moment - only got 1 in newborn and about 7 in 0-3 so a few newborn would be good. How many do you have? rhhb at msn dot com

helsi will check when baby wakes up...also will have a ton of 0-3 in a week or so as dd is growing out of them now.

starlover · 15/03/2006 13:13

my ds was 9lb 1oz and was in his newborn stuff for a good couple of months...

Flamesparrow · 15/03/2006 13:18

I bought a few newborn, a few 0-3 and set money aside so that we could buy the right size & colour when he was born (didn't know he was a he then)

Its worked fairly well because although he was 8lb 5, he is still diddy, and even most "newborn" things swamp him... he's only just grown out of early baby asda babygros!!! It meant that I had a few things that did fit him, and we still have 0-3 for him to grow into, but not too many when I'm sick of seeing him in neutrals.

Ailsa · 15/03/2006 13:20

dd1 was 8lb 8½, ds was 9lb 1½ and both were too big for newborn as they were long babies.

emmawill · 15/03/2006 20:56

Thats the thing it depends on the shape I was told my ds was going to be long but not that big, he was both. He has the biggest feet aswell which were far too big for 0-3 months sleepsuits as I like them to have plenty of room for them to grow properly.

Nemo1977 · 15/03/2006 21:03

helsi I cant find the vests at all and have searched the house...no idea where they are. I have 11 sleepsuits though. I also have a snowsuit in newborn size. For the sleepsuits I would like £5 which includes the postage for them, and if you want the snowsuit an extra £3?

Just let me know. I do definetly have a ton of 0-3mth vests so if you want some let me know as I will be moving DD into next size in the next week or so.

Emma1404 · 15/03/2006 21:10

hi helsi....i would personally but 0-3 as you never know what size, and people always buy sweet little little outfits. I have a few bits for sale that are either new, or hardly worn. take a look at \link{http://emarsden1.photosite.com\this}

Emma1404 · 15/03/2006 21:12

while sorting out bits to put on this website i also have newborn vests, and 0-3 months ready to go if your interested....email me. [email protected]
