Cracking, wasn't it?

popsycal · 29/12/2003 23:44

my dh is there now
all pixies and elves to me

willow2 · 30/12/2003 09:36

popsycal - that was exactly my ds' view so I saw the first two films with my brother-in-law and nephew. Then I forced DS to watch the first two films on dvd over Christmas. He was hooked line and sinker and came along yesterday with us to see the third which he deemed, "Excellent". Considering dh is an absolute cynic when it comes to blockbuster movies this was high praise indeed.

GeorginaA · 30/12/2003 11:33

Fantastic! Gimli had the best line ever

Hate spiders even more now, mind you...

turnupthebass · 30/12/2003 11:51

went to see it for my birthday last week. I did enjoy it but I thought Two Towers was a better film overall. Some of the battle sequences in this got a bit confusing for me - though I was very tired and missed most of the spider bit!!

the children loved it - yes, agree about Gimli's line. DP a big big fan of the books though and did point out every alteration (including that line!)

willow2 · 30/12/2003 17:15

Just like to clarify that I went with dh and not ds. Do not think a 3 3/4 year old really up to death and gore on such a scale.

hmb · 30/12/2003 17:37

I thought it was amazing and loved it. I felt that the end 'lingered on' too much, and they should have finished it when Aragorn was made King. Heaven help us when the extended DVD comes out, we will all need bladder extentions to cope with it!

GeorginaA · 30/12/2003 17:45

I was very proud of myself - 19 weeks pregnant and I didn't need to go wee! (due to not allowing myself a drink an hour before and during the film and a strategic bathroom visit minutes before the start!!)

helenmc · 30/12/2003 22:36

saw it last night - couldn't walk afterwards as my knees locked from sitting soooo long. Enjoyed it, but agree with Hmb the end lingered. Also wondered where JK Rowling got that idea of spiders from.

Lisa78 · 30/12/2003 22:57

hmb - think you are allowed to go for a wee without missing anything, when watching it on dvd

Lisa78 · 30/12/2003 22:58

what was gimli's line?
Am off on Friday

turnupthebass · 31/12/2003 10:06

Well I assumed the line referred to was when Gimli says "that still only counts as one!", which was a laugh out loud bit but DP assures me isn't from the book.

I agree about the ending - it did seem to go on a bit and Aragorn seemed to be the true ending really.

helenmc - throughout all 3 films I have been struck by the similarity to the Harry Potter stories. Lots of things common to both and I'm sure if Tolkien was still around there'd be the odd court case in progress as we speak!

GeorginaA · 31/12/2003 10:10

It's in the spirit of the book though, am reading the third now and Gimli mentions the "game" he and Legolas had when he won by one (referring to how many they killed in battle in book 2).

Agree with the ending. Lots of people getting fed up in the cinema with it dragging. From what dh says though the book is worse with about half the book being devoted to the aftermath! I'm guessing Peter Jackson had to cover some of it without being slated for missing most of the book!

nerdgirl · 31/12/2003 10:27

I loved the ending!

When I heard the scouring of the shire was gone, I was really disappointed and I was afraid that the film would end on the high note of the coronation and miss the fantastic ending of the hobbits return and the grey havens.

Besides, he really had to end on the same last line 'well, I'm back'. I was in floods!

turnupthebass · 31/12/2003 10:30

the slo-mo entrance of all the characters was a bit over the top I thought but I did enjoy it a lot all the same.

do think Two Towers is a better film in general though.

handlemecarefully · 31/12/2003 13:04

I am seeing it tomorrow night - but will have hard time remembering what happened in the first two so hope 'continuity' isn't a problem...

turnupthebass · 31/12/2003 13:28

erm...there is some continuity and I needed a quick resume from DP who knows the story inside out. Basically that Gollum is guiding Frodo and Sam, and the others are separate at the start.

and the start of the film confused me and I didnt understand why that bit wasnt in the last film (or the first one really) - you'll see what i mean!

Scrooge · 31/12/2003 14:42

Does anybody else completely fail to find the LoTR books or films interesting/entertaining? I'm not slagging off those of you who do like it. I quite enjoyed the Hobbit book... but (and I normally like fantasy or science fiction), LoTR bores me to tears.... And just now the hype for the film, the weird weird fact it won the nation's favourite book award, is grating my nerves something rotten.

suzywong · 31/12/2003 14:46

Scrooge
It is grindingly dull pixie and elf nonsense, why why why do they have those stupid names and mock regional accents.
Thought the wraiths in LotR 1 were terrifying but as for the rest of it, what a load of b***cks.

So sorry if this has offended anyone, but you did ask

Scrooge · 31/12/2003 14:52

, Suzywong. I know everyone is allowed their own taste, but the hype when I also find it so dull is driving me to distraction!

suzywong · 31/12/2003 14:55

And as for Peter Jackson (director) genius and visionary he may be, but mate, go and spend some of your cash at the barber's before you do any more interviews. Please, or do them from behind a screen!

Lou33 · 31/12/2003 15:01

Rofl Suzy .

tallulah · 31/12/2003 21:00

Suzy, my middle DS is a real LOTR fan (before the films- as he keeps telling everyone) & insisted I read him the books in serial form. I HATE IT!!!! I stumble over most of the words & what I'm reading makes no sense.. We started book 1 when he was 7. He is now 14 & we are partway through book 3....

(Did enjoy the film tho!!)

suzywong · 31/12/2003 21:03

now that is devotion, hats off to you tallulah
are youcoming in to tge bar later?

hmb · 31/12/2003 21:12

I have read the book several times, but not for many years. I read it first at the age of about 13. Since the firlm I have tried to re-read it, but haven't the stamina any more
