an ex-colleague of mine used a proper posh linen one, every night, with a napkin ring. this marks him out as Very Posh, don't you agree? mine only come out for dinner parties and the like (napkins, that is).

I like to have napkins on the table and we have them on for evenings meals. Its dd's job to set the table and she has a routine for doing this, mats, napkins and then cutlery (I do hte breakable as shes only 2). They are great for spillages etc and handy for finger foods too. didnt think I was particularly posh.PMSL at the thought.

(Aint got napkin rings tho)

PrincessPeaHead · 14/03/2006 14:05

No. Very posh people NEVER use napkin rings as it implies that you have the same napkin every night, which is revolting. The done thing is to have a freshly laundered large linen one (white or ivory ONLY) for every meal (not just dinner), I'm afraid.

He is a wannabe. Marks him out as irredemably middle class.

ProfYaffle · 14/03/2006 14:07

I use kitchen roll, does that make me Very Common? Grin

MrsBadger · 14/03/2006 14:08

Napkins only for when visitors are here ,but yes large, white, linen, and no rings.

To be honest we normally eat in our cooking aprons, which are a lot better for keeping the spills off...

iota · 14/03/2006 14:08

we always have a box of tissues to hand - for the kids mainly

JackieNo · 14/03/2006 14:08

We have kitchen roll (now renamed 'dining room roll' by my DD). Does that count?

desperateSCOUSEwife · 14/03/2006 14:08

NO
napkins only used on xmas day
and dont own napkin rings

Tutter · 14/03/2006 14:09

me too PY. and if dinner has been particularly spicy, i then use the same piece to blow my nose on. Unspeakably Common i would say Grin

yep we use kitchen roll too v. common - tho it is from Lidl!!!

When the dd's have something 'messy' they have a teatowel with a peg around their necks - very classy.

Feistybird · 14/03/2006 14:10

for general day-to-day use, we use kitchen roll (marks me out as irredemably workin' class Wink) and DD2 ocassionally uses her sleeve.

justmummy · 14/03/2006 14:10

Completely unposh here. Don't even own any napkins. So common in fact that we use kitchen paper.

mojomummy · 14/03/2006 14:11

Ooh I've got napkin rings Blush they are lovely beaded ones. I bought them as a wedding pressie for us & they still have the label on ( 3.5 yrs later)

Are we terribly non-u ?

Also have napkins for guests - cream linen, well they are cotton, but look like linen

tarantula · 14/03/2006 14:12

teatowel and peg what a brillaint idea. Must remember taht one.

serenity · 14/03/2006 14:12

We have big stack of Ikea napkins on the window sill next to the table, never ever remember to put them on the table.

Bugsy2 · 14/03/2006 14:15

PPH, are you a Nancy Mitford fan by any chance? My father always used to wince at the thought of napkin rings!!! Wink

colditz · 14/03/2006 14:23

I can beat you all on the common stakesGrin

We use babywipes, that just stay on the table while we eat.

But in my defence, all our meals are family meals, we don't have dinner parties, we have tea parties (with kids) or takeaway on the sofa(without kids).

I have a vaguely floating notion in my brain that using a napkin when you have neither servants nor guests is pretentious.

ProfYaffle · 14/03/2006 14:25

mine is from Lidl as well

Tutter · 14/03/2006 14:25

baby wipes always on the table here too colditz. in fact i'm not sure how i managed pre-baby wipes - have packs in the car, bathroom, kitchen, handbag, pram, loo (sorry)...

I have napkins, no rings tho, but they are black, not white. So I guess I'm not posh neither?

iota · 14/03/2006 14:27

In my ignorance I thought napkin rings were just a decorative way of presenting the napkin, for those of us who don't have the time or energy to fold them into the shap of a swan or what have you

Tutter · 14/03/2006 14:29

yes - PPH, surely the napkin ring thing is revolting only if they are engraved so as to be identified as your own...? but then again, you never see napkin rings in posh restaurants (or not so poch ones) do you...? ho hum

Nikkinoo · 14/03/2006 14:31

With you on that one colditz. My DD is a muck magnet. We have a very kiddified household

Lucycat very good tip re pegs to hold teatowel round neck (had spag bol last night would have been v handy as DD top will be orange for next 3/4 washloads (have a crappy washing machine))

littlemissbossy · 14/03/2006 14:33

LOL at PrincessPeaHead - Anthea Turner in disguiseGrin

Nikkinoo · 14/03/2006 14:33

In honour of babywipes thet are very handy for a quick shoe polish prior to leaving the house. Although not the ones that have the lotion in cos they are a bit smeary

LadySherlockofLGJ · 14/03/2006 14:34

Cloth napkins at the weekends and high days and holidays. I have always considered napkin rings to be more about table decoration.

Good quality paper napkins the rest of the time, can't be doing with napkins that crumble when you use them.
