What is 'Wear and Tear' on a rental property?

As you know we have just left rental and moved into our new house.
Just met the landlord at the property who said he is going to take off money for every mark. He says he will have to re paint the house...and started to tell me haow to bring up my kids because there were a couple of marks on the carpets.

Am Fuming...

see, this is why i never pay the last month's rent in any flat i'm in. b/c the bastard landlord is going to keep my deposit, anyway, so stuff 'em.

i tell them i'm going back to the US and give them a bogus US address to 'find' me so they f*&k off.

It was actually uni students who told me to w/hold the last month's rent, b/c they, too, had been taken for thousands of pounds in lost deposits.
