from top to bottom. He was in the bedroom with me but must have got out whilst I was making the bed. I am shaking a feel sick.
Dont know what to do, shall I take him straight to A&E, he seems fine, I have checked him all over, he has a bump on his head but is crawling about and giggling as usual.

How old?
Would watch him carefully for the next hour, then reassess.

cece · 12/03/2006 12:57

For your peace of mind take him to casualty especailly if he is very young...

Mosschops30 · 12/03/2006 12:58

he is 14 months, am I the only person this has happened to, I feel like the worst mother in the world

DS1 did this no less than 3 times Blush - but each time he was absolutely fine. The first two times I took him to the Dr.s (walk in Emergency appointment) and apart from fat lip he was fine.

3rd tine I just kept an eye on him for any changes - and again he was fine.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/03/2006 12:59

Mosschops - my ds2 did this at 18 months - he got up and walked away - didn't even cry Shock

If you're worried about it take him to A&E for a quick (?) once over.

Hope you stop shaking soon.

Flossam · 12/03/2006 13:00

Firstly no you are not the only person for this to happen to. This (and similar) happen to us all. I could list the accidents that has happened to DS but you don't have time to read them right now I'll be guessing.

I am sure he is fine. But in this instance I think you should take him in. Its a long way to fall and will be better all round for peace of mind to know he is ok.

Hugs to you, hope everything is ok.
xx

This has happened rathe too often to me Mosschops (well, not me, but my children or children in my house). It is scary and you will feel guilty, bt if he seems OK and didn't black out when he fell down the stairs, he will probably be fine. And unfortunately, his experience won't stop him trying to do it again so keep the stair gate closed from now on.

SorenLorensen · 12/03/2006 13:13

Ds1 fell top to bottom once - I saw him fall though (I was at the top too and tried to grab him...) so I knew he hadn't hit his head which would be the thing I'd be most worried about. Where's the bump? It's bumps to the back of the head which are the most potentially worrying. The advice they generally give you is to look out for drowsiness or sickness. I don't know whether I'd take him to A&E or not - I would if I was at all worried, but I think if he'd broken anything he's be crying, not giggling. It's just the bump on the head that would worry me, really.

If it's any consolation one of my friends took her ds upstairs to the toilet, shutting the stairgate behind her, and leaving her 2 year old downstairs for a few minutes. Even though the stairgate was shut he managed to stand on the bottom step of the stairs and fall off...and he broke his collarbone. So these things happen - no matter how careful you are Smile

DD did this once too. She was around 2.5 at the time. She too was ok. So long as he didn't black out he should be fine. If he appears to have headaches or vomits any at time today or tomorrow then get him checked out. Otherwise a lucky escape!

Mosschops30 · 12/03/2006 13:22

I'm keeping an eye on him for now, but worried that I am being irresponsible by not taking him to A&E, just dont fancy sitting there for hours, for them to say 'well if he hasnt been sick he can go home'.
I havent put him down for his normal sleep, is this right, I can always put him down later. He is playing and chattering away, and still walking around ok

the first six hours are the most important. if he seems ok after that time theres very little chance of anything being wrong. would be hesitant to bring to a&e but thats because our local has had so many outbreaks of MRSA virus in the last year i'd probably be doing more harm than good, if you have a out of hours gp service you can call that might be best but if not just keep an eye on him, and make yourself a nice hot cuppa to calm tha nerves Wink good luck!

TwoIfBySea · 12/03/2006 16:35

Mosschops, it is scary isn't it! Dts2 did this when he was 18 months old and I took him straight to A&E in a panic thinking he must have broken something.

The doctor there said that "don't worry babies bounce." !!!! Advice was similar to on here, just watch him over the next few hours, he was otherwise completely fine.

It is worth going to get him checked out for your own sake. Babies and toddlers tend to get prioritised at A&E so you'd be seen quickly.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 12/03/2006 16:41

mosschops, very scary and no you are not the first and wont be the last this will happen to
no matter how careful you are
like other posters just keep an eye on him but i would personally take him to and e just to put your mind at rest
take care
hugs

Both ds's did this - from top to bottom - when they were v. young. We didn't take either to A&E because they both cried, then wanted cuddles and then seemed fine. Just keep an eye on him but if he's crawling around and giggling he sounds OK.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/03/2006 16:48

Oh god, you're by no means the only one! My DS1 fell down a full flight at someone else's house once. And DS2 has fallen down a half flight ... um ... five or six times? (Our one flight of stairs has a 90 degree turn, halfway down.) Well, normally it's just a few steps, really. He never blacks out, he never throws up. I've never taken either of them to the hospital for this sort of thing.

Now I'm feeling like a neglectful mother.

yummimummy · 12/03/2006 23:11

I'm glad you brought this one up as my dd (9 months) fell all the way down the (wooden) stairs last week and I felt absolutely terrible too.
Bad mother; should have seen it coming.
I now have stair gates.
When I told other mums they were all kind and supportive - and most had had something similar happen too. My mother was the only one who sounded very disapproving.... but then it emerged that she's given up smoking and was being generally odd anyway!

singersgirl · 12/03/2006 23:37

DS2 has fallen down my mum's full flight of stairs twice and ours at least 3 times. A few bruises and tears, but he has always been fine. Just keep an eye on him for any wooziness, vomiting etc for the next 48 hours (though as pps have said the first 6 arethe most critical).
