Advice needed on criteria for getting a council flat?

Mosschops30 · 11/03/2006 18:48

Just wondered if its possible to get a council flat in an area I dont currently live in. It is in a very poor area where people dont want to be housed and I imagine difficult to fill. But I want the flat.
I would pay for it, as I am not on benefits.
Any help or advice gratefully received

not from dh, he would probably come with me. I am desparately hanging on to my roots I think, remembering good times and seeing this as some kind of dangling branch that might get me closer to home again

Have you registered your application with the Council, you are giving a number and then you bid with that number. The person who wins the property is the one who has been waiting the longest and in most priority. Where we live Leeds there are very high waiting lists for council property and they want to know if you are single and you have to fill these details in on the form, they then decide when you bid for the property whether you suit the criteria. So if you said you had children you would never be offered a council flat you would have to be single same if you were single you would never get a council house. I suppose all different areas work differently but this is how the Council work in the Yorkshire area.

I have read the whole thread. A council or Ha home has to be your permanent residence. Not a part time home.

well why didnt you post that instead of making a smart arse comment when you know nothing about it.
thanks you everyone else for your comments and contribution

I don't want to offend and apologise if I do but I can't understand why you would need a council property if you own your own home?
Counil properties are there for those who are unable to afford to buy a house of their own and surely renting it to you would make the waiting list for people in that area even longer??

Not having a go at all I promise but it seems a little unfair that the council would consider giving a property to someone who already has somewhere to live. Smile
