Argh - have just been looking at my hair and I have got significantly more grey at the roots than I have ever seen before !!! I am 38 - so it has to be expected I guess - but so far it has just been the odd hair - now I can see clumps coming through !!

Natural colour is dark blonde - but I have got one of those "couleur experte" dyes on it - the one where you do the base colour first then the higlights after ! Roots are now coming through dark and streaked with grey !!

What shall I do ??

I don't want to be grey - I want to be streaky blonde ! Please tell me wise ones !

thank you xxxxx

I have lots of grey, I'm only 18, be thankful!

(Sorry no help lol)

Passionflower · 10/03/2006 21:30

I have loads of grey (am only 32)and I guarantee it shows up way more on me cos I'm brunette. Keep promising myself to go to the hairedresser for a professional semi-permanent colour but never getting round to it.

It's having babies that does it for sure.

Passionflower · 10/03/2006 21:30

Eeek at spelling...

expatinscotland · 10/03/2006 21:35

get professional highlights. it's the only way. i'm about 40% grey and have a mix of high and lowlights.

pebblemum · 10/03/2006 21:36

Im another one with grey hairs, have had them since i was about 14, my friends used to sit there in class pulling them out Blush

Im now 28 and Dh loves pointing them out to me on a regular basis. I dye my hair often which i am not sure is a good idea, dont know if it makes it worse but if i dont dye it I have a collection of strands that make me look a bit like Mortisha(?) from the Adams family,

I am very dark haired so every little grey hair seems to shine out like a beacon.

Fastasleep-do you think ours could be a result of our little 'destroyers', my hair has got a lot greyer since DS2 was born Grin

mcmum · 10/03/2006 21:44

Shock me too and im only 31 !!! have v v v long brown hair with grey streaks oh no Shock

expatinscotland · 10/03/2006 21:44

i have dark hair. high and lowlights, peeps, i'm telling you.

swedishmum · 10/03/2006 22:18

I'm going to have to give in to colour - pulled out a couple of grey hairs I noticed in the spotlights at dancing (kids not mine) last week. Shouldn't complain - I've got to 42.

Norah · 10/03/2006 22:19

Hmmmmm - thanks for all the replies !

Expat - so how does that work then - do they colour the grey bits - or do you end up with 4 or 5 different colours ? (Natural, grey, highs and lows ?)

Was wondering whether to get base colour professionally dyed back to dark blonde and then highlights put in as well ??

Any hairdressers out there ? Friend said "get a dia colour " - no idea what that means though !

Go LIGHT BLONDE!!! And quickly!! The they don't show until you can get back to the hairdressers for your roots to be done!

Carmenere · 10/03/2006 22:20

Am I the only one who has harboured a secret desire for platinum blond tresses with a lightly tinted mauve hue Grin

expatinscotland · 10/03/2006 22:20

norah, they high and low light your hair so your grey is hard to pick out. b/c when it's dark and grey, it's VERY hard to cover. you also risk build up on your hair if you dye a lot at home.

Norah · 10/03/2006 22:22

Ahhh - I see ! Sounds expensive though !

How often do you have to have it done ?

Carmenere - No no no - mauve hair suits NO-ONE !!!

I;m 27, very very dark hair and not grey but los of WHITE hairs coming through. Luckily they a re (for now) kind of underneath the top layer (have v v v v thick hair) and I HATE them.

They stand out a mile off and I spend ages pulling them out (think me mum was right, pull one out and ten grow back!!!)

Norah · 10/03/2006 22:37

Lilly - I found my first grey hair at 29 - and they have been steadily increasing year on year !

Think if I went natural I might have the badger look - grey temples kind of thing !

Is so not fair - my Dad didn't go grey until I was at uni - my dd is only 5 !! Mind you - mother was salt and pepper when I was small - must be hereditary !

Will have to dye tomorrow - will hav eto go for Belle Colour or something - but don't want to lose my streaks ! Might ring hairdresser next week too !

Thanks for all your advice - night night now xxxxx

I have had the odd grey hair since I was 16. I have long(ish) very dark brown hair - almost black and have quite a few grey / white hairs amongst them now.

Luckily I have very thick hair and mine can be hidden very easily now it's long. Most of them are underneath the top layer IYSWIM.

But I agree with expatinscotland - when I had really short hair my grey hairs were much more noticeable - asked my hairdresser if I should dye my hair and she advised me to have lowlights/highlights, so that they blend in.

And it worked. They are very expensive though - I did it twice and then started growing my hair, so didn't bother (plus I stopped working and couldn't afford to have it done!!!!)

LillyPink · 10/03/2006 22:50

I would love to have lowlights or whatever, but lack of money and ultra fast growing hair kind of rules that out atm. Any recommendations for a shop bought hair colur for ultra dark brown hair?

Norah · 13/03/2006 19:38

Right then - have booked a "colour appointment" with my hairdresser for next week ! Think I am going to get her to dye it back to my natural shade - then put a few high and low lights through it ! This is going to cost me an arm and a leg - it had better look better than my home-kit job does !

In the meantime - I will mainly be wearing a hat !

Oh and - grey eyebrow hairs !!! Just spotted a few ! Am going to try dyeing them along with lashes in a few mins !

My highlights and cut cost £55. I have the highlights done every other month and a cut every month.

expatinscotland · 13/03/2006 19:41

WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Norah · 13/03/2006 19:49

Hi expat - I do hope so ! Don't you find the grey gets really visible at the roots though in 8 weeks ? I'd have about 1.5 inches of roots showing by then I reckon !

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 13/03/2006 19:49

I can see my grey a lot in 8 weeks, but others can't so well b/c of hte highlights.

Norah · 13/03/2006 19:52

Ooooh - how exciting !!! Are your highlights very pale then - almost white maybe ? I wish I didn't have to wait so long until my appointment ! Might have to retouch my roots tonight to tide me over !

Lillypink, I bought a semi-permanent hair dye In November. I still haven't got around to using it!

I also have very dark brown hair and the grey/silver bits just make my hair look dirty (yuk). Plus my hair is quite coarse.

No advice, just sympathy!

Thirtysix · 13/03/2006 20:29

Ooooh-know how you feel,am also 38 and hate the grey appearing.

However,we will know when life as we know it is truly over when our "ladygargens" turn grey too.....anm told it really does happne and am absolutely dreading it.

Bloody hellp,we shave our pits, pluck our brows, wax our legs, highlight our hair and then...horror of horros....we have to dye the ladygarden!ShockShockShock
