brimfull · 10/03/2006 21:04

I loved Danielle Steele and agatha Christie.

I can't get my 14yr daughter interested in books other than Louise rennison ones.

Totally mortified dd at recent parent/teacher meeting when I asked her english teacher to recommend some books for her.GOd it's so easy to embarass them isn't it?

anorak · 10/03/2006 21:08

OMG I am reading Octavia now. Have to read all Jilly Cooper's novels ATM for work.

They are naff but quite entertaining.

Blandmum · 10/03/2006 21:09

I also read loads of Agatha Christie! Great fun. I used to get them from the library and they had that 'library' smell. Smile

For work??? What is this work?!

Yafta · 10/03/2006 21:12

Did anyone read the Chalet School books? I LOVED those books, especially the first ones in the series. They always seemed to escape death by a hair's breath in each book. I wasn't so keen on Jo but some of the others (can't remember their names) seemed so cool!

Perhaps I am showing my age!

TearsBeforeBedtime · 10/03/2006 21:13

chalet school books, swoon! I was so deeply impressed by the trilingual regime at the school. Finally visited Interlaken 18 months ago!!It's stunning! Now just need to go on holiday to the Australian Tyrol!

Blandmum · 10/03/2006 21:14

I was just thinking the same thing about the trilingual bit!

Yes, I too dragged a reluctant husband to Interlarken. I did not admit the reason for the visit though. Perhaps he knew and that's why we divorced shortly afterwards.....? I was a bit obsessed by those books. I really wanted to live in that setup.

TearsBeforeBedtime · 10/03/2006 21:17

snort, it's not just me then with Interlaken GrinGrin. Went to Interlaken with my mum and DS, who loved it there.

harrogatemum · 10/03/2006 21:20

Judy Blume - remember "Forever" and "Are you there God, its me Margaret".

Also someone called something Danziger who was American and wrote cool teenage books.

Used to read bits of Sweet VAlley High in WHSmiths.

And felt all grown up by reading 1984 in 1984 aged 12.

And I remember reading Less than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis at a young-ish age. Thought I was so cool.

Nbg · 10/03/2006 21:22

Oh crikey

I forgot about the Point Horror books too. I must have read all of those. The babysitters club too.

harrogatemum · 10/03/2006 21:29

does anyone remember - somebody barton, student nurse, then staff nurse, superintendent nurse, about 8 books in total or am I just really old.

MrsMuddle · 10/03/2006 21:29

The first "adult" books I read were Flowers in the attic etc etc, by Virginia Andrews. I scared myself shitless and had to sleep with the light on for months!

Bugsy2 · 10/03/2006 21:37

MrsMuddle, I was the same with those - used to be wide eyed with terror! Had to read them because everyone else was, but I can still remember the worst bits of them now - horrific.

harpsichordcarrier · 10/03/2006 21:45

I capture the castle
Cold Comfort Farm

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Darling Buds of May before that bloody tv prog ruined it Angry
