I'm just looking into the idea of starting my own business,
would any of you be interested in buying hampers for example, mums-to-be, new born baby girl/boy, new mums, new dad and dads to be.
also could personalise the hampers.

new baby would have a vest, sleepsuit, hat, blanket, hooded towel, soft teddy.

Also how much would you look to pay for that inc p&p

helsi · 10/03/2006 18:23

IMHO it would really depend on exactly what was in there and how much total cost inc p&p would be. I have seen some before that include things like a newspaper of the date of birth and toiletries too but the price was too high and could have been put together cheaper by someone going to mothercare and boots etc.

If you are thinking of it being a profit making business you need to look at how much it would cost you to make inc your time etc and what profit margin you are happy to accept on each item.

There are some internet companies doing something similar already - check them out to compare their prices.

Darciesmum · 10/03/2006 18:27

thanx,

what would you have liked in your hamper and how much would you pay?

all ideas and opinions appreiciated

If I were looking for this, I'd want the things to have a 'twist' - eg organic cotton babygro, fabric that was utterly 'different' and hard to find in the shops etc. Maybe some baby massage oil - not chemically. A lovely Jellycat soft toy rather than a teddybear. A black-and-white toy for a very newborn to look at. How about a sleeping bag, or a sling, for a deluxe version, or one of those Taggies blankets, or a fleecy velcro swaddling wrap?

Definitely would be put off by things like blue-for-a-boy/pink-for-a-girl and would be impressed by a company that seemed to deliberately avoid that. Also would not buy anything that included baby bubble bath/shampoo etc.
I'd be willing to pay quite a lot for a v well-thought-out basket and P+P of say £7?

ja9 · 10/03/2006 18:36

i've seen hampers liek this before but they 've been way overpriced. I really do like the idea tho'.

wheretogo · 10/03/2006 18:43

If you are looking for things to go in your hampers I make "hand-made aromatherapy products" - soaps, bath and massage oils, bath salts, bath melts and so on. I sell to more upmarket gift shops.

Twiglett · 10/03/2006 18:45

sorry, no I wouldn't be interested (well you asked so I'm being honest)

desperateSCOUSEwife · 10/03/2006 18:47

dm it is just basically a layette which are available anyway (or at least were when i had babies)

MaryP0p1 · 10/03/2006 18:50

My DH is selling Italian hampers over the Christmas period.

chicagomum · 10/03/2006 18:59

I think if you had the facility for people to create their own hampers from a list of items you provide (like M+S do at christmas) that would def. appeal to me so you could tailor it to your choice (and budget).

Darciesmum · 10/03/2006 19:08

its like Chicago mum and pruni really
all the bodycare products would be natural all very nice. would be the personal touch type

what do you think?

OP posts:
helsi · 10/03/2006 19:16

If the price was right (and that is the main thing) then you could have different types and different sizes incorporating the different prices. It is hard to say how much but I would pay anything up to about £50 but it depends what was in it for the money. Something at £50 would need to be something special that I couldn't probably put together myself cheaper.

clothes, toiletries, pampering things, wine, baby books, chocolates, birth cert holders etc are all things to think about including in there somewhere.

Darciesmum · 10/03/2006 19:29

well yeah my first post was just roughly! :)

and there would be all sorts of sizes the smallest prob £10 and premium anything between £30-£50 at a max!

I'll make up some examples soon and see what the response would be!

I have a gift basket book on ebay just now, if you nead ideas Smile.

WestCountryLass · 10/03/2006 22:52

My friend has started a similar business and it is slow to take off as the market is saturated with baby gift companies and Mothercare have now started doing them too.

Perhaps if you made your company niche (organic/English/British products/Fair Trade) you might ahve more success?

nannyme · 10/03/2006 23:29

Yes, I was trying to think how to put that.

Niche is definitely the way to go. Niche or Luxe, I reckon. Otherwise it doesn't stand out as an amazingly exciting or innovative thing due to market saturation as somebody else put it.

It will be down to your sourcing of products. I pay silly money for stuff that is a bit different and anything folksy/Cath Kidston seems to go down well at the moment.

You probably need to think in terms of buying into 'lifestyle' and maybe also consider themes? People buy certain things because it makes a statement about them - even more so when it is a gift.

Another thought is to cater to the last minute, no effort required purchaser - like, er (don't shoot me) crappy partners who forget to buy their Dp a present when she has given birth.

HTH

Not read other posts, but Mothercare now have something similar and I just bought one for my SIL baby - it cost £40 and I think it's got a couple of bodysuits, a sleepsuit, teddy, hat, mits, photo album. Can't remember what else. They had quite a lot of stuff though.

Darciesmum · 12/03/2006 08:09

GDG, mine would be made to order, from a list of gifts. would you be more interested in that, then buying one thats pre packed by Mothercare?

Yes I would like this idea if I could choose from a list of stuff. Agree with pruni, organic clothes and non-chemical toiletries would do it for me.
