There seems to be huge variation on what you shoudl say and when? DD hasn't yet started asking , but I'd rather get on with it .
when do you feel is the best time and how did you apporach it?

I started early but didn't make a big thing of it. Helps if you're pregnant - gives you a bit of a jumping-off point!
Just keep it very basic and then answer any questions matter-of-factly but without extra detail. They'll ask another question if they want to know more.
There are a couple of great books: Mummy Laid an Egg by babette cole and, for older ones, Where Willy Went (can't remember author but it's new).

My dd is 7 and i have just answered her questions as she asks them. I have always tried to be honest but obviously kept it at a level that is suitable for her age.

So far she knows that the baby grows in mummys tummy from an egg, the egg starts growing into a baby because mummy and daddy have a special cuddle and their love makes the baby start growing. She also know that the baby comes out of the mummys 'flower' (our word for ladies bits!) although i have told her it doesn't hurt (eek what a lie!!!!!)

We did bits and bobs as they arose, not a lot before the age of 5 when I was pregnant.
We had a quite big talk about periods, sex etc at 7. She's got a pretty good grasp of the basics I think. All of it was led by her, I didn't sit down for "the chat"!

thanks for these replies. My DD is 7 and hadn't asked anything yet so Iwas starting to get concerned .
Do you know any other suitable and useful books on the subject?
