we had our usual Mummies group afternoon and a couple of other friend that age but just had cake!

We had a party for both our kids but we had their naming days on their 1st birthdays so was quite a do. I think lots of people have small gathering or a family tea or something to mark the occasion.

PS. Think it a bit bah humbug not to do anything, even if it is just grandparents round for cake :)

I think having a small party at home with close family/friends is perfect for a 1st birthday. For both my boys 1st birthdays we decorated the house with balloons, banners etc and for DS2's because there were more children there we even handed out party bags.

Both my boys had great times and DS1 can still remember the odd thing about it usually if he sees one of the photos it triggers a memory and he can go into detail about what happened and what gifts he got and that was nearly 8yrs ago nowEnvy wish I had a memory like that.

my dd has cf,and her first year was such a horrible one.full of medicines, physio, hospital visits, needles, xrays etc,so for her first birthday we had a huge party!!we had a bouncy castle, bbq, lots of balloons, the full works!!and she loved it!
planning on doing the same this year aswell!

we went on holiday the day before Ds's first birthday, with all our family.
It was just after lunch on his big day when my mum suddenly said "oh heck, I forgot to give T his birthday card gift. did everyone else do it at breakfast?"
Dh and I covered our mouths in horror as we realised that we'd completely forgotten!! We had bought cards etc with us but had just forgotten on the actual day. DS doesn't seem to have suffered for it though but our friends and family have never let us forget what happened.

we did - probably because of 'peer pressure' more than anything else. just had a few of his pals around and their parents. they had free play. Adults had coffee and cake.

dd1 did - her birth was clouded by worries over her health and the fact that she had down syndrome, she had come through two open heart surgeries within a few days of each other at 8 weeks old etc.

We felt we needed to celebrate her being part of our family and I guess surviving our first year as parents.

Dd2 - simply had afternoon tea with some friends.
