And my mum thinks I'm bonkers.

www.omlet.co.uk (sorry, can't do links).

The run thing, plus one Miss Pepperpot and one Ginger nut ranger.

We have the space. Can't see the problem.

Have you kept chickens before Carla?

waterfalls · 08/03/2006 14:45

carla · 08/03/2006 14:46

\link{www.omlet.co.uk\there you go}

MerlinsBeard · 08/03/2006 14:47

stupidly expensive if u ask me! but they do look good

LadyTophamHatt · 08/03/2006 14:48

I'm quite sure a Mner has one of those for her chickens....
I've certainly seen them before on here.

WigWamBam · 08/03/2006 14:49

I won't laugh at you; my grandparents always kept chickens - they were hard work but they were also quite rewarding in their own way, and I can understand a bit why you feel you would like to. But why do you want to keep chickens, and why has H said no? It might be easier to demolish his argument if you are clear of your own reasons for wanting them.

busybusybee · 08/03/2006 14:50

Im just interested - keeping chickens seems a fairly odd thing to want to do given what happened to you only a few weeks ago.

Chickens require care on a daily basis, for some time. I think its a big responsibility.

IMHO you need to sort out the problematic issues in your life FIRST before you consider taking on new responsibilities

wwb,

Girleenas would love them
I'd love them
Two chickens can't be that much to cope with
Fresh eggs (okay, I'm realistic to a degree and understand we'd have to supplement our supply)

H says they're smelly.
H says there are no chicken kennels, for all those times we go on holiday Wink

BB, somehting I left off that list, I thought they might be quite therapeutic, too.

also given the current threat of bird flu, is it wise to invest yet anyway?

fastasleep · 08/03/2006 14:53

Has no one heard of BIRD FLU!

What are you doing?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...ahem...

Are you sure you want chickens? They do smell, and they peck and they can chase your children (ok last one's quite funny to watch)

WigWamBam · 08/03/2006 14:57

Even two chickens can be harder work than you would give them credit for - at least at first.

H is right in that they can be a bit smelly - but it depends on how well they're looked after. I also remember some of my grandparents' chickens being quite aggressive sometimes, which may not be so good for the girls.

On the other hand, my grandmother in particular got tremendous satisfaction from her chickens; she found them better company than my grandfather, for one thing! The egg production isn't going to be high if you only have two; depends on whether you would be relying on them for a bit of self-sufficiency.

fastasleep · 08/03/2006 14:59

I had an irrational fear of chickens for years after living in rural Yorkshire. Seriously.

I'm going to get the Wallice and Grommit makers to do a CURSE OF THE CHUBBY CHICKEN film...

zippitippitoes · 08/03/2006 15:03

I was tempted by the idea of chickens when we move to the country but I wouldn't with the current bird flu threat

dp was against as he says they bring in rats

I think all animals require more care than you think initially

carla · 08/03/2006 15:07

Mmmm. Bird flu was the first thing my mum mentioned.

WWB, two hens can't be that hard, surely? Or smelly. God, I'm so tempted, despite him. Smile

can i be honest for a sec here

If i had £385 quid spare then i would either spend it on my children or go away for a few days instead. nothing in my head could justify spendin that amount of money on myself, however much i try to persuaude my DP that its for all of us.

sorry, just my opinion

nailpolish · 08/03/2006 15:14

fastasleep! i too have a phobia of chickens. my uncle kept them, and i used to get shoved out the back door with a bowl of feed to throw at them as a 'treat'

they scared the shit out of me

the way they walk/run

the way they peck

these red bits that wobble about

the beady eyes

the stink

zippitippitoes · 08/03/2006 15:15

but it would be for the children too wouldn't it?

and eggs fresh

fastasleep · 08/03/2006 15:16

The red bits NOT THE RED BITS!

suzywong · 08/03/2006 15:16

same here NP, nasty scaly feet and beady eyes
Yuck

but if you want them Carla, you have them

carla · 08/03/2006 15:17

mofm, I know, I know. But we spent that in about a day and a half at Woolley Grange a couple of years ago, and it was rank.

At least the chickens would be here to stay. And they are for the girls. I just think it would be lovely to see them rushing out in the morning to find an egg.

God. I'm still not dissuaded.
