What on earth made this noise?

at 1.30 last night. Totally freaked me out. Kind of like a wailing, 'where' noise that sounded like an old man wheezing. On my own last night and it really gave me the heebie jeebies, especially because first of all I thought I heard it on the baby monitor! Does anyone know?

Was it on your baby monitor or did you just think that?

We pick up other peoples houses with ours.

Flossam · 08/03/2006 10:01

No it wasn't. I had the window open, baby monitor sits near the window. Went and looked out, couldn't see anything, then shut window!!! Grin

I heard what sounded like polish (to me) talking on my baby monitor once, (just like that tape off 6th sense) and it scared me silly.
I later discovered it was the German lady who lived over the road getting her son to sleep. My monitor picked hers up.

compo · 08/03/2006 10:02

It sounds like a cat. We get that late at night. I think they fight or stake out their territory or something right under our window!!

DumbledoresGirl · 08/03/2006 10:03

If you had the baby monitor on, I would guess you picked up something from another monitor, or even on the radio waves - is that possible?

Please let's not go down the supernatural route as I am on my own tonight too.

Flossam · 08/03/2006 10:17

Am 100% cert it wasn't on the monitor.

Could be a cat, only I haven't heard them sound like this before, they squawk more! Do geese or swans fight? We have a small stream down the back. Or what do fox's sound like?

DumbledoresGirl · 08/03/2006 10:18

Foxes are very distinctive. Quite a spooky noise. (used to live in a park and heard them every night).

Marina · 08/03/2006 10:19

Fox, I bet you. They produce a range of blood-curdling noises, not all of them obviously foxy in origin. I think you heard Mr Fox trying out his chat-up lines Flossam...

Flossam · 08/03/2006 10:31

Well do you think I should ask him to do it at a more reasonable time then? Wink

Really frightening noise actually, specially as afterwards there was a repeatative banging noise and the floorboards creaking. I'm pretty sure that it was the heating, but one thing after another you know?? Oh well. We are both still here! Grin

I agree. It might have been a fox. They make dreadful, often terrifying noises at night.

MrsMills · 08/03/2006 10:47

it was a ghost

Callisto · 08/03/2006 11:12

Used to live in a pub which was haunted - very scary. My dp and I would lie in bed and listen to the noise of someone walking along a passage running the length of the pub. Used to hate cashing up on my own after hours because of a really menacing atmostphere and my cats would watch things no-one else could see. Everyone who lives there has said the same thing. I have also lived in an old converted stable block which was haunted by a ghost who would turn things on and off - radio, kettle, lights etc. He was a nice friendly ghost though.

SleepyJess · 08/03/2006 11:13

Cat's fighting. Without doubt. Have you never seen them? They pace around each other sizing each other up and emitting a really human-sounding wailing noise! It was probably in the garden outside the window in which the monitor was.

SleepyJess · 08/03/2006 11:14

(Oh GOD I have turned into One Of Those People who put needless apostrophes in!!! Shock Blush) CAT'S indeed!!

MrsMills · 08/03/2006 11:15

it was the ghost of an old man wheezing

SleepyJess · 08/03/2006 11:16

Or the wheeze of an old man ghosting!! Shock Grin

Well thanks for the reassurance you lot!! Grin

I'm going with the foxes. I have heard cats lots of times and this was no cat!!

lovecloud · 08/03/2006 11:52

Yep - i guarantee you it was a fox!

I remember moving to London in my early 20's, fast asleep one night in bed with dp pre dh and i was woken up by this horrible wailing, it sounded like how you would imagine an irish banshee sound. it scared the crap out of me and immediately thought of witches and ghosts, i shook dh hysterically and he calmly told me it was just foxes mating or whatever they do.

it sounds so scarey.

another night it sounded like a woman being raped, screaming in pain so i jumped up and opended the window but i could then tell it was an animal

freakish noise!

BettySpaghetti · 08/03/2006 11:54

Are you sure you didn't dream it?
I've woken up before now convinced I've heard a loud noise and its turned out that it was obviously in my dream as DP hasn't heard it or it dawns on me as I wake up a bit more that it was part of my dream.
You can be totally convinced that you've heard it in real life though

Flossam · 08/03/2006 17:18

No, had been woken up by DS who was still crying in amongst all this. Think he was teething but [pathetic emoticon] I was too frightened after I had brought him in with me to go and get him some calpol. Blush Blush
