cot mattress - would you buy new every time?

for your own children or would you use the same one for each child if it was in good condition? I am sure I read somewhere that they should be new each time.

no - I used the same one for both my children.

SenoraPostrophe · 07/03/2006 20:17

no I would not.

someone asked this the other day - the advice used to be that mattrresses previously used by a sibling were OK, but that other 2nd hand mattresses were not. latest advice does not bother to mention mattresses at all.

perhaps it was all a big swizz made up by upholstery companies.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/03/2006 20:18

My first three children used the same mattress, but then when no 4 came along, I noticed the inner sponge part looked a bit mouldy in one place Shock so I bought a new mattress for him and hope to keep it for grandchildren.

turniphead · 07/03/2006 20:20

absolutely NOT! all mine brought up in the same patch

starlover · 07/03/2006 20:25

i would use the same one... as long as it hasn't been up in attic for 3 years or something! lol

ok yes it has been in the loft for 2 years and dh has told me he forgot to wrap it up! Not damp or anything but should I still buy a new one?

Some are really expensive but I can afford the cheapest one I have seen in Toys R Us. It is standard size but is very basic and covered in aplastic covering. I am presuming it is safe to use or else they wouldn't sell it but I really can't afford one of these all singing all dancing mattresses but would feel better with a new one if I'm honest. Do you think the one at £27.99 will be ok?

the basic one will be fine.
DD2 has the most basic cot bed mattress from toysrus on her junior bed and its actually very very comfy!

Posey · 13/03/2006 20:58

They must comply to safety standards if they are from somewhere reputable like ToysRUs, even if it is inexpensive I would have thought.

Flip · 13/03/2006 20:58

Mine had different mattresses but there is a five year gap between them and it had been in the loft. Gave the old mattress to my mum to use in the travel cot for occasional stop overs.

Uwila · 13/03/2006 22:25

Two kids, same mattress. But, we did get a new moses basket mattress for number 2 to use in the early days. This was probably paranoid overkill.

Maya8 · 13/03/2006 22:33

I would buy a new one. The other one has got wee and vomit soaked on several times. We didn't use a waterproof cover (I think they are not recommended before a certain age or something and by then it was too late) and it would be horrible to pass on. It wasn't a really cheap one but after 2 and a half years it has not faired well; looks really uncomfortable.

I sold mine, because ds is 3, I am not pg and have no intention of being pg any time soon. So it was a question of space and getting a better price now before it gets all old.

We bought the Sooper Dooper one from ToysRus as we were first time parents. I have since been disgusted by the whole thing.

a) It's a piece of foam covered in plastic. Which as long as you have not pierced it in any way should last for at least 2 years.

b) It's got a cover thingy which when washed came up fine.

c) If we hadn't bought the cover thingy, it would have been 30.00 cheaper.

Although my DS went into a toddler bed from 13 months, this bloody mattress never really had much use, so I had no compunctions about passing it on.

I would say yes, if it doesn't look knackered.

UCM · 14/03/2006 02:52

Oh God, arse before face as usual, I meant no.

UCM · 14/03/2006 02:54

Give it a good old scrub with Asda spray with bleach. Even if it has been in the loft. I would.
