Do you mind being bossed/prohibited from doing things?

I keep getting asked why I'm giving up work.
Lots of reasons but I have to accept that one of them is that I cannot bear being told what to do - or that I can't do something - any more.
Does everyone feel like that or do some people not mind?
I just cannot stand it. I get all edgy inside when I get bossed. Am I weird? No-one else I work with seems to mind too much.

I hate it too. In fact, I actually do the opposite sometimes, just because I can't stand it. Luckily, I often work in jobs where I'm left to get on with it so it doesn't affect my ability to earn a living as much as it might! I really would like to work myself though, eventually.

I used to work in a department store and it was sick, all these numpty managers bossing people around who had twice their brains and experience. Could not bear it. Hope to be self-employed as well, eventually.
I have been a manager too and it is really hard to tell people what to do.

Don't mind being told what to do as long as I feel it's the right thing. If it's not the right thing then I usually forget about it quietly. Luckily I'm in the sort of job where I get to make most of my own decisions, even if it is dull as ditchwater.
Outside of work, no-one would dare try to boss me around as it just can't be done. Many have tried and all have failed!

paolosgirl · 04/03/2006 13:53

Yes, I hate it. My job now means that I manage the team, and don't really report to anyone, as long as I come up with the goods. There's a big restructuring going on now though, and our dept. will cease to exist shortly, so my new role is one big question mark. My big fear is that I end up being 'managed' and told what to do, when I'm perfectly able to direct my own work.

I'm the same pruni. I hate being told what to do. I also hate telling other people what to do.

Pruni · 04/03/2006 14:24

But do you feel hatred and loathing welling up inside? The need to find a way to wreak revenge, however small? I think perhaps I have a Problem With Authority.

i hate not being able to influence the structure of the organisation and therefore working in what i considered to be a flawed envoronment which i cannot change.

i dont mind being told to do something - i see the reason behind it but loath that the outcome is inconsequential - if that makes any sense whatso ever

on another note - i was in tesco the other day when a worker went up to a manager ( who was packing bags for a customer) and said " i'm off on my break now"
to which the manager then asked for his shift patern and how long he was working that day - and the bit that got me was - he said " i dont want to see you sat with xxxxxxx again"

i thought - how the feck can you tell someone not to sit with someone - its not fecking school!!

Pruni · 04/03/2006 14:31

Ha yes I used to get told off for 'talking' when I worked in Principles. (Aeons ago)

I can't bear it Pruni. I have to physically bite my lip about 15 times during a conversation with my mother. It's also the reason why I got on very well as a nanny (more or less left to your own devices, at least with my employers, anyway), and had a complete nightmare working in a nursery Shock

Also why I now work for myself. I am not "a team player".

sharklet · 04/03/2006 14:57

I hat it - it makes me want to do whatever I've been told not to do. Even if I wasn't interested in it at all before!

NappiesGalore · 04/03/2006 17:53

ooh, i cantstand it either. get the 'all edgy inside' feeling too and find myself feeling like apetulant 3 year old again. have to really fight myself not to cut my nose off to spite my face sometimes

hovely · 04/03/2006 18:45

yes I hate it too and it is the main reason I am self employed.
decades ago when i was on work experience from school I thought the office where I was sent was so soul-destroying and the manager such an arse that i deliberately typed in lots of wrong figures into a telex that was about to be sent (before the days of faxes!. Subsequently heard staff being told off for my 'mistakes' and regretted it a bit - feel more guilty about it now, there could have been serious consequences if somebody had to take responsibility.

Mirage · 04/03/2006 22:21

Yes.Thats why I'm self employed now.I'm another one if told not to do something, will go out & do it just because of the principle.

I can't stand ditherers or those who can't or daren't make a decision either.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2006 22:59

Yes. My boss is great, but she's in another building, so instead I have to deal w/a work colleague who tries to act like a boss - and who of course detests our real boss. If I could figure out how to earn a semi-decent living being self-employed, I'd be off like a shot.
