Does anyone have any experience of helping out at Beavers or Cubs? Either as a parent helper or as a leader?

If so, how much time does it take up? What sort of things do you do? etc etc

Thanks

My DH and I used to be cub leaders - a long time ago!!! It was a couple of hours on the night, and we(all the leaders) had a meeting every six weeks or so to organise the next 1/2 terms activities. We had a very efficient (ie: bossy, power mad) person in charge, so we didn't do as much as we would have liked, as she liked to do everything herself, then she didn't have to share the credit!!!

Of course, to be a leader you have to do the training first, which takes a few weekends/evenings, but once it's done, it's done!

Thanks Beth, that helps.

Not cubs - used to do rainbows and brownies which didn't take much time really. I know cub and scout leaders get much more training but I don't think it is excessive though.

Sorry not much help.

Thanks.

It all helps.

I've been thrown a bit because I help (very) occasionally but I've been asked to do more and before I commit myself wanted a bit more information from other people before I decide whether to become a more regular "helper" or to become a leader.

I loved being a leader - although the downside was kids shouting Squirrel or Tawney at me when I was shopping with my pals! :)

lol, the thing that puts me off Beavers is the leaders are all Winnie the Pooh characters (which I dislike anyway) but my own darling boys have suggested I be called Piglet. Shock

i stay at beavers and help out but dont do anything other than that. i rather enjoy it and it beats walking all the way home only to have to set off back there 30 minutes later! i just help out the kids with activites, make drinks etc. the proper leaders do all the planning so cant add anything about that am afraid

ma2cra · 04/03/2006 17:39

lol, I often pop the shop during cubs, but know what you mean with beavers being just an hour.

Thanks DollyDander............

I was a Rainbow Leader (similar but for girls aged 5-7), our meetings were 1hr 15.

Would I recommend it? oh I don't know!. If you have got a good back up then yes, the kids were wonderful and I loved them to bits.

Why am I not doing it? Because I would often get left on my own after the other adults didn't turn up on time (complete breach of regs but what can you do?), because the mums refused to help, because there was no support in my County whatsoever, as far as I could see.

Sorry, I know it's not like that everywhere, just my experience I am sure.

Thanks for that Peachyclair. Think our particular group is lucky in that although they need more assistance (hence why I've been asked) the people they have got are excellent (both cubs and beavers), and the GSL is very hands-on.
