when I switched the computer on today I had a scree

bad pool caller with some directions on it and suggested I restart and see if everything working

did that came up with option to go back to alst good working but before I had a chance to think about it it started windows up

so I updated norton anti virus and scanned and it picked up some beagle virus/worm/trojan that was apparently discovered yesterday

it comes in an email and the computer down;loaded it or was trying this morning but seems to have infected the computer without me opening the atachment

now have I got rid of it or will it just come back again

I'm running norton again

I do keep the virus definitions up to date but this one came in the day they found it I think so my advice is update yours

run another anti-virus scan and see ifg the scan comes up clear, if it does it means the virus has gone.
i would also recommend downloading a good spyware prog and running that too.
if you continue to have problems, you could try doing a system restore.

Shaunofthedead · 02/03/2006 11:57

oh and check youe email inbox for unsolicited emails and your trash folder and delete any new ones without opening them

zippitippitoes · 02/03/2006 12:32

thank you

I just have this feeling that when I switch off and switch back on it will come back

I have run adawrae and spybot

I haven't run system restore before, does that mean I won't still have the emails I've received (the ones I want that is)

I have anti virus but I just delete e mails that I dont know who they are from or even if they look slightly suspect. I hope your pc is ok now

Angua · 02/03/2006 12:35

I use spybot a lot, do you know you can go to an innoculation icon and innoculate against viruses

zippitippitoes · 02/03/2006 12:42

it managed to infect the computer while it was receiving it? Because I hadn't updated my anti virus since sunday and this worm whatever was only given a cure yesterday

what is the innoculate thing?

Its in you spybot, it looks like a needle, just click on it and follow intructions! I do it once every couple of weeks it s like a booster jag! against viruses

SoupDragon · 02/03/2006 12:57

zippitippitoes, did you disable system restore when you cleared the virus? If not, it can sit there and reinfect when you boot up IIRC. Was it Norton's instructions you followed?

Try running \link{http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/\Panda Active Scan} remembering to check the "automatically disinfect" boxes. I@ve had good success with this (must be run in IExplorer, not Mozilla and it won't run if you've had Mozilla running since booting up your PC)

zippitippitoes · 02/03/2006 13:08

right I've had mozilla running

I didn't do systme disabling

I sitched off the computer last night

switched it on this morning and got a blue screen saying I'd installed something new (which I hadn't)

followed the instructions to switch off and on again

and it offered the option to go back to the last normal windows environment

so while I was thinking it started windows anyway

so I updated norton and ran it and it discovered this beagel virus which they put on their definitions yesterday which is why I didn't have it defined already

so I've run norton three times and it is now "clean" but I didn't disable system restore as I don't know how/didn't know I needed to

so if I switch off and on then it will have this problem back? and my norton won't be updated anymore?

Go to the Symantec/Norton website and search on the virus name. They usually give you a step-by-step guide to getting rid of it completely, including how to do a System restore and amending you registry.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2006 13:17

The Norton instructions often tell you to

  1. disable system restore - Control panel, System, click the "system restore" tab and disable restore.

  2. do the removal in "safe mode" which involves clicking Start, Run, type msconfig and click Ok, choose to boot up in "diagnostic mode" click Ok

REboot and follow the instructions for removal that you remembered to print off at the start :o

Reverse the changes in 1) and 2)

The Panda scan is great since it can pick up things missed by Norton and disinfects a lot of things automatically. You do (or did) need to reboot your PC if you've been using Mozilla though and then lauch the scan via Internet Explorer.
