Can't really stay here - WHERE TO LIVE???

I am American living in St Albans. It is a lovely place to live for parents with small children but I am becoming increasingly concerned about the move to 2ndary school. A girlfriend mentioned to me that her son was mugged at his school on a non-uniform day (his attacker was wearing a hoodie so he couldn't identify him). WTF? I realise that this isn't terribly surprising in this day and age (how sad is that?) so I am thinking of moving out to somewhere a bit more, well....detached.

Friends have said that you can't get away from the problems in society as they exist to a greater or lesser extent everywhere, but I'd like to at least find a place to settle down where things are simpler.

We have looked at moving to Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, etc...

Can anyone point me in another direction or give me any advice at all?

If we move it will have to be soon, it will become increasingly difficult to wrench DS and DD away from their little friends. :(

Feelingold - where are you?

Pfer - I'm in Grantham. It may not be everyones cup of tea but it has good schools, lots of things for the kids within walking distance and is quite a safe town (you can walk home after a night out safely). We like it.

We found a nice place in Louth on the internet last night now we just need to find a weekend to come up and visit (again).

Glad I wouldn't be the only Mumsnetter in the area!!??? ("The only Mumsnetter in the village!")

I wonder what Louth would think of a mad American?

In Lincolnshire if they don't like you they'll set their sheep on you :)

Piffle - if you see a 5ft 10in blonde, long legged stunner with a short skirt and perfect hair and make-up walking round Grantham, that's not me, i'm the bedraggled looking fatty having a bad hair day pushing a double buggy with a toddler in tow so give me a wave as you go by please. :)
