I'm going to a wedding this weekend and it has only just dawned on me that it's most likely going to be freezing. The dress I was planning on wearing (which I love) is quite summery - cream with short sleeves...so my choices are

  • wear dress with a light-weight cream jacket and freeze
  • wear dress with my long black winter coat and look faintly ridiculous
  • wear something more wintery (lord alone knows what) under my winter coat for the church and then change into my dress at the reception (which is at a hotel where we're staying so logistically perfectly possible)
Instinct tells me to go for no 1 and suffer. what do you think?

I am vain enough to do no 1. Could you get hold of a scarf/shawl/pashmina to wear with the dress, or would this too look ridiculous?

carla · 01/03/2006 09:36

Freeze. You have to, for a wedding.Smile

poppyseed · 01/03/2006 09:40

If long black winter coat is so long - they won't see the dress anyway.
Go for comfort and warmth. An hour in a freezing cold church is too long for fashion!
Have a good time whatever you decide!

no 1 .. think about the photos!
pretend not to shiver and hope you don't turn purple!!

If I go for the freeze option am I also going to look ridiculous from the pov of looking freezing and looking like I'm wearing something totally innappropriate for the season? I just didn;t think about it - for ages it was a long way off, it was in March (which at least sounds like spring) and no-one there has seen said dress before so I didn't worry about what to wear until this morning when it just struck me that it might be March but it still feels like winter. The other option - also faintly ridiculous and very vain is bomb it to the shops and see if I can find a warm beige coat. Not sure what my chances would be - and don;t want to spend much money - one of those you never know - could find a prefect bargain or wast a couple of hours finding nothing...

better to look appropriate for the occasion that inappropriate for the weather ..

TinyGang · 01/03/2006 09:53

I would have gone for no.1 years ago; my grandma used to say 'beauty feels no pain'.

Now I'd probably be sat at the back with a flask of soup and thermals. I hate being cold and have a pathetically low cold threshold.

Take your coat. And do it up. And wear a hat and gloves too. Hey..I'm a mum now. What other answer can I possibly give!Wink

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 01/03/2006 09:57

I suppose if I keep the coat done up I could get away with it. gloves is a good point - at the moment the only ones I have are pink blue and green stripey knitted mittens. not really going ot cut it are they?

I suggest either black coat, well buttoned up, with smart wintry accessories (gloves, hat), which you then whip off at the hotel to reveal pretty dress
or cream outfit with thermal undies and/or pashmina, which you ditch once back at hotel.

actually I think the real problem is going to be shoes/tights - the pretty sandals I assume go with the cream outfit will a) be freezing and b) look a bit funny sticking out from the winter coat

Bozza · 01/03/2006 10:03

if you could go with the coat I would dress it up with a nice colourful scarf and maybe matching gloves. Think you are going to have to splash out on a bit of something at least.

Bozza · 01/03/2006 10:04

Good point on footwear MrsB. I would suggest, if going for the coat, wearing smart boots and then ditching them along with the coat etc and wearing pretty sandals.

acnebride · 01/03/2006 10:09

I would put the dress on (always boiling at hotels, I personally hate hot underwear) but wear a thick skirt, tights, sweater, gloves, hat, coat and boots over it (Russian fur hat with diamante earrings? Beret?) and would shove holdups, sandals and light scarf in my large handbag.

All very well suffering for beauty but IMO cream dress with blue goosepimply skin is not beautiful...

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 01/03/2006 11:52

Footwear I think I can get away with - I've got a pair of dark red strappy shoes (the dress has got some dark red on it) - but they're not open toe so I think they'll look ok with the coat - they're the kind of shoe you could also wear with a winter evening outfit ifkwim. I wish I had time to go and find that beige coat

I think the cream coat will look lovely and you shouldn't have to freeze - wear a red pashmina over the coat (go with the shoes!) and wear red gloves and a red hat (even a frivolous wedding hat will keep you a bit warmer!) very posh and you should be perfectly warm in all that. How does that sound??

MrsBadger · 01/03/2006 12:20

ooh yes sparklemagic!
(trying to remember where I saw a fantastic red cord trilby the other day - may have been Topshop or M&S)

GDG · 01/03/2006 12:21

I'd freeze to - have done on numerous occasions at weddings! Last year in August for one!!!

GDG · 01/03/2006 12:23

But others' suggestions much better Grin

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 01/03/2006 13:17

have looked at the weather forcast for where we will be - sleet and arctic winds! I think it's going to have to be the coat. sparkle - the cream is a jacket and I would freeze in it - even with a scarf and hat.
