Would it affect freedom of movement on your landing? For instance, if there was a fire with lots of smoke and you were rushing everyone out of the house would the door being wide open onto the landing impede your exit?

We changed the door to open outwards on my ds's bedroom as it it very small. It has made the world of difference, we don't have any safety issues with it, I would say go for it.

Hazellnut · 24/02/2006 13:29

we have a teeny bathroom too and have done this - works fine even though the door opens onto a confined space. def worth it.

HI - we did this in our very small kitchen and made a load of difference. Go for it.

MrsBadger · 24/02/2006 13:34

We considered this, but the door was in the corner of the room, so in the end just hung the door the other way round so it opens flat against the wall inside rather than sticking out into the room (if that makes sense)

Twiglett · 24/02/2006 13:35

its a safety hazard isn't it .. because people walking through the hall could be hit by the door opening

Marina · 24/02/2006 13:36

Can you do a sliding door as a compromise YG.
The kitchen door came off years ago in our house but obviously that's not advisable for the bathroom...

You can certainly get folding doors, don't know how practical they are, but have seen them in Wickes, etc. They fold back into four panels, iyswm. For our understairs cupboard, we're hoping to get a tamba door, which rolls up and down - no idea where we'll source it from. Can't see that working in your case, though.

I have a folding door for our downstairs loo, as it opens onto the lobby between the kitchen and the backdoor. It folds into half. You can buy them in places like Band Q and prob fit it yourself if you have the tools. Better alternative than having it go outwards.

My ds's door opens out against a wall and doesn't block any exits

a bi-fold door would save you having to adjust the door frame too (see Kelly's post)- alot less effort. DS has one on his bedroom door and we used to have them in our living room in our old house.

(Minor hijack - tambour doors for Fauve here , here and here - not sure how big your cupboard is!)

Fauve · 26/02/2006 15:57

OMG thanks, MrsBadger - more info about tambour doors than I ever thought possible! I'm in tambour heaven now
