i realise you don't know him but what would you get for a 50th birthday? Budget is quite generous (say up to £500, possibly more). Interests - he doesn't have many as he is a workaholic - but enjoys watching pretty much all sport, does a bit of football coaching for ks2, does a bit of cycling. Likes flashy sports cars (I know! ...rolls eyes)....ummm?!?

Oooh.
I would get tickets to a great sporting event like a test match or a rugby international. Or a table at a days horse racing.

Pagwatch · 14/06/2012 09:44

I should add I am a sport addict too so it would be win win for me Grin

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that you can rent out supercars/sports cars - don't know what the cost was but having an Aston sat on the drive for a couple of days might be quite nice. Or Pag's idea.

Ummm, I'm 50 in 8 years time - I really really like rugby, 3-day eventing and anything else equestrian. Have I given you enough time to sort out my birthday treat? Wink

I agree - an experience, not a thing! Maybe a weekend away incorporating his fav sport? Grand Prix/tour de france/footy/rugby/steam train driving/hawk handling - whatever he's into!

Grin ah Poledra, that is about the time DH turns 50.
I could suggest we celebrate as a threesome.
I am sure there would be no potential for amusing misunderstandings.

I keep churning this out Grin. For DH's 50th I arranged an 'experience per month', some were not expensive (theatre tickets, high wires), included a cooking course with DS and a hot air balloon ride with DD. The highlight was a family holiday (which we would have had in some form anyway!) to South Africa. It was a real success as DH is a 'doing' person.

The other great thing is that the cost was spread over the year, as apart from the bookings, many of the experiences didn't have to be paid for until they happened.

I love planning days out too ajandjj
I sent DH on a cookery course at Le Manoir a year ago. He loved it. Then I got to turn up and meet him with the children and we all had tea. Smile

Thanks guys - I agree with you, an experience (or experiences) rather than a thing!

If he likes fast cars, one that I did for DH was going to Bologna for the weekend, and arranging for him to spend a day going around the Ferrari and Lambourgini factories with DS. They loved it. There are guides who organise the trip for you - I just did the flights and hotels.

hmc · 14/06/2012 16:12

Wow - he'd like that!

Ajandjjmum- I love your experience/ month idea, brilliant and truly inspired. Must have been loads to organise though.

What about a surprise party with his best friends/ family turning up?

ajandjjmum · 15/06/2012 12:52

I got a lot of brownie points with that one - and tbh, I thoroughly enjoyed the organising. The few people who knew also got into it, coming up with ideas and suggestions. The great thing was you get the idea for the month, check costings, make reservations but don't actually have to really organise it until just before, so the work and money is spread out over 12 months.

Fortunately it was pre-recession! Grin
