dunno .. but she was a bit of a slapper

after all

everybody maid marian

snurk

Blu · 22/02/2006 22:21

Definitely she had a bow and arrow. A great big F**k off one, and was a fantastic shot. Much better than weedy Robin. If being portrtayed by a girl in fancy dress, anyway.

And I should know, I was brought up in Nottingham.

Blu · 22/02/2006 22:22

Actually, she might well have done. Noble-women took part in archery since mediaeval times, and it would have been handy, wouldn't it?

Frizbetheexpansionset · 22/02/2006 22:36

and it is still an offence not to practise said archery on a sunday don'tyaknow!

Clary · 22/02/2006 22:44

No twiglett, they did exist. Well, Robin did. Well maybe.
Well the Sheriff of Nottingham anyway....
Schapps, is it a fancy dress outfit? I have just spent an hour making a white apron and a silver cape (not for the same child I hasten to add). Is it that time of year?

Blu · 22/02/2006 22:47

Did she wear a silver cape??

Twiglett - of COURSE they existed. I've SEEN the Major Oak. And what about that song (R hood, R Hood, riding through the glen..)...that wouldn't have been written if they didn't exist, would it? Hah!

SueW · 22/02/2006 22:51

And there wouldn't be a Robin Hood statue outside the castle would there, if he wasn't real?

Blu · 22/02/2006 22:52

No.
Or Maid Marian Way.

schnapps · 22/02/2006 22:54

Thanks everyone. Yes it is for a costume - book week coming up so definitely that time of year! [GRIN]

Now I can't seem to find a set (just found out the bow holder is called a quiver!) to go with said costume. Looked on the net but can only find real leather expensive type ones, or modern ones that just wouldn't do. Don't really want to have to resort to making one!

Blu, no, the silver cape is for Peter Pevensie (DS1) while DD is going as Red Riding Hood (hence the apron). Still have to make the said RRHood.
Yes indeedy Book Week loometh!
At our school most kids come as Spiderman (err, in a book?) or Cinderella (highly impractical in early March), does everyone else find the same?

Clary · 22/02/2006 23:02

sorry Schnapps, meant to say have you looked at this site bow and arrow but no quiver but may be a bit expensive. Nice stuff tho.

Hallgerda · 23/02/2006 10:25

I don't think normal rules on the behaviour of respectable ladies were enforceable in the greenwood. And nobody really knows, so you can make of her what you will. If you (or your daughter) want her to be a bit more ladylike, how about a nice falcon?

Why not get your daughter to make her own quiver? It's amazing what my sons can manage with paper, cardboard and sellotape, and it's a bit sad when these school fancy dress events are just a chance for the parents to show off their sewing skills.

hotmama · 23/02/2006 10:47

Of course they existed (from another Nottingham girl) and don't even start with the 'RH comes from Yorkshire not Nottinghamshire or you will be cyberthumped'

MM was tough - better than weedy Robin IMHO.

schnapps · 23/02/2006 17:29

Thanks for the link, Clary

And the costume is for me by the way
