DD severed her finger now back at nursery, I am worried

2 weeks ago DD aged three severed the tip of her little finger in a tragic accident. The mothers help was collecting her from nursery and she stuck her finger into the buggy mechanism as the lady was unfolding it. It is healing well and DD is well in herself but dressing changes are v distressing. The first week I was off work then my mother came to look after her for 2nd week. Today was first day back at nursery. She has a bandage but obviously a pretty much open wound. I am sick with worry that something will happen to her how can they watch her one to one like I have been doing? Taking more time off work is not an option and I realise that being back in her rountine is good for her, but she seems so helpless and fragile to me. It is still 2 hours until I get home. DH is on days leave to play golf. Why can he take it in his stride and not me? Anyone else's child had similar accident?

Oh LasVegas, how horrible.

Probably the very fact that she has the bab=ndage on will act as a non-stop reminder, and will dictate how people are around her.

Hopefully a chirpy dd this evening will re-assure you.

dd2 trapped and partially severed her thumb in a door jamb when she was 2. She had surgery to reconnect it and then we had months of keeping it clean and dry - great fun with a 2 yo! As you say, dressing changes are v distressing but as everything started healing dd2 took it all in her stride. The nail came off completely after 6 weeks (no -one at the hospital warned us this would happen) and that was a bit of a shock to her - and me - when it came off with the dressing. She is left with a small scar and we thought she had forgotten all about it (she is 4 next month) until she caught her other thumb in a cupboard door on her first day at nursery and had hysterics, screaming "No hospital" over and over. But other than that she has been fine and got over it much more quickly than I did.

Hope all goes well with your dd and that she has had a good time at school today.

I took the top off my little finger as a kid. I have a funny shaped nail and the bit that came off looks a bit like an 'add on'
No probs though.
Hope you dd was ok today

Thank you. DD had a fine time at nursery and is well in herself. I am not handling it well, worried another accident will happen and feel awful when she says that she wanted Mummy to sit next to her in ambulence (I was at work when it happened).

Glad your dd had fun at nursery. We all feel bad when our lo's get hurt especially if we aren't there when it happens but i think we tend to dwell on it more than the kids do. Unfortunatley accidents do happen and we cant wrap our kids up in cotton wool even though it would be good if we could.

I know lots of people who have lost fingers or tips of them. It seems quite a common accident. my MIL chopped the top of my dh's finger off when he was about 8yrs old. He wouldnt get in the car for school so she forced him in and slammed the door only to discover his finger was in it. It was mainly his fault but he got his way and didnt have to go to school that day while his mum was left feeling guilty.
My mum lost the tip of her little finger when she was 10, a deckchair folded up on her and caught it.
I even used to work with an ex butcher who had hardly any whole fingers left where he had chopped them off over the years(yuk) I could go on and on. What i am trying to say is these things happen no matter how horrible they are or how much we try to keep our LO's safe.
