River Cottage Country - Bridport area of Dorset???

We are looking to move soon and dp says we'll go anywhere I want as long as he can get to London a few times a month, so call me an idealist, but I've been fantasising about living in the kind of world Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall portrays in his River Cottage series - you know, full of slightly insane morris dancer types, blokes (and women) with far too much facial hair, weird herbally hippie types, paganesque rituals, close but laid back community spirit and beautiful countryside.

Does this exist in real life? Does anyone live around there and can enlighten me??

Yum, did you see the receipe for leeky Welsh rarebit - must try it! Am jealous ntt - would love to live somewhere more rural, as would DH, but DH has to be within commuting distance of London. We're in Lewes (E. Sussex), right on the edge of the South Downs and very pretty town, but it's not quite the same.

East Sussex is lovely - been thinking about there too! It's soo difficult and such an important decision aargh

its a long way from London and tbh you really need to come down and check it out - have you only seen it on the telly?

I hate to say it but...its not really like that in real life! Hugh's farm is in one of the most beautiful parts of Dorset and it is lovely around here. But do keep a realistic head on your shoulders.

Where aer you living now?

ntt · 19/02/2006 15:54

Hi Enid yes, only seen that particular area on the telly, and fell in love with the idea of it. According to rac.co.uk it's less than 3 hours drive from London, which is doable as dp only has to be there a few days a month. We would live in north Cornwall which we do know very well, but it's just too far. I am a realist really, I know people are people wherever you go and I'm sure round there is not an exception, but it just seems as perfect for us as anything else I've seen. We live in commutery North Surrey at the mo. We both need a studio for work (we would be working at home) and somewhere for people to stay. We have no family (apart from 8 mo ds, who probably has sn), so a bit of a community thing would be lovely for us. If all goes according to plan, we'll be staying in Burton Bradstock the week after next to have a proper look round.

BBradstock is lovely! Have a lovely time and let us know what you think.

I live about 30 mins away from there and know the area well. It is expensive though so good luck.

If you are in the area Netherbury and Beaminster are worth looking at - both very very pretty and Beaminster is very up and coming though. Expensive though as I have said.

suzywong · 19/02/2006 16:10

O h it is lovely indeed, BBstock

My dad used to take me to the beach there on holiday and make a mermaid tail for me out of the sand. And we used to say in Netherbury. It really is a charming area

Have a great time

Enid · 19/02/2006 16:11

suzy you will be glad to know that dd2 insists dh makes her a 'sand dog', which he does, complete with basket, everytime we go down there

ntt · 19/02/2006 16:20

I hope we manage to get there, we could certainly do with a nice break!! Will definitely have a poke around Beaminster and Netherbury. Off to check out house prices now! Can't possibly be as bad as round here

I am glad to know that, it is a proper Daddy's beach

And the three or four trees on top of the hill at Simondsbury

Actually, when the fragrant boys are old enough I 'm going to take them back for a proper English seaside holiday, you can't get much better than West Dorset, what with West Bay and all.

LipstickMum · 22/02/2006 15:29

Oooh ntt, that sounds exciting, a real Relocation! Have a lovely time exploring. I like Hugh, we've often thought it would be nice to go down and bump into him when he's selling some tripe or whatever at the Farmers Market. Never managed it yet though. Dorset is a pain to get to from where we are, in high season it's gridlock on the roads.

Enif · 22/02/2006 15:30

it will be hellish come the olympics as the sailing is in Weymouth - madness

suzy west bay is my fave, a little bit pikey which makes it perfect, we often go there to get fish and me and the dds eat chips on a bench looking at the sea - very nice

Enif · 22/02/2006 15:33

hugh is often at bridport farmesr market on a saturday (esp in the summer)

LipstickMum · 22/02/2006 15:36

Maybe we should make the effort then, I'd love to try his tripe!
