Wish my parents had kept all or any of my old books.

Dh got a copy of "the Story of Ferdinand" from his parents for ds (only 5months) the other week and spent ages gasping "WOW!" at every illustration. I woke at the weekend with a sudden and quite desperate need for "The Mole and the Rocket". I'm also really looking forward to reading Clement Freud's "Grimble" to ds when he's old enough.

Which books would you really like to find again and share with your own kids?

Does anyone remember those rhyming books, may have been Ladybirds. I remember one about a poor little rabbit in a hutch who escapes into the woods and joins in a bunnies picnic. But gets chased by a fox.

I remember reading Mallory Towers when I was younger and thought that all English girls lived like that! Now I know the difference........used to wish I was one...skiing down the hill after hours.....sneaking into the kitchen.....doing naughty things like writing OI in chalk on the teacher's chair!!

popsycal · 04/12/2003 09:06

ant and bee...that sounds familair

Cam · 04/12/2003 09:11

hana, yes, I really wanted to be Alicia

FairyMum · 04/12/2003 09:20

As a Swede, it has to be "Pippi Longstocking" of course

SoupDragon · 04/12/2003 09:40

OMG! Mary Plain! My grandmother used toread those to us in bed on weekend mornings. She lived with us so it was a regular thing. Brer Rabbit is another set she used to read to us.

I used to get the Ant and Bee books out of the library. They were wonderful.

Famous Five
Farawy Tree (I've bought all 3 from Ebay )
Mr Pinkwhistle
Mrs Pepperpot
Mallory Towers/St Claires

Some other school series beginning with Tre.. Trebizon?

roscoe · 04/12/2003 10:04

Was Trebizon the one where they always played tennis? And can someone pleeeeease put me out of my misery and tell me who the 4th Bobbsey twin was. Freddie & Flossie, Nan & ???

Northerner · 04/12/2003 10:06

OOh, Mrs Pepperpot. Yes I remember that. Very good.

janh · 04/12/2003 10:09

Peter?
(No idea really - that just popped into my head!)

SoupDragon · 04/12/2003 10:13

I think they did play Tennis in Trebizon. I think the main character was Rebecca and there was a Tish in it as one of her friends. Rebeccas' parents had gone abroad to work and put her in boarding school.

SoupDragon · 04/12/2003 10:15

" Bert and Nan are the older twins, and Flossie and Freddie are the younger set."

The internet is a wonderful thing

janh · 04/12/2003 10:22

Have just found this site where you can actually read the books!

roscoe · 04/12/2003 10:30

THANKS!! That's been really annoying me ever since someone mentioned the Bobbseys yesterday.

Did anyone ever read The Silver Sword by Ian Serrailler- about the journey of three brothers and sisters who fled Nazi Poland - just brilliant!

popsycal · 04/12/2003 14:50

Finbar · 04/12/2003 14:57

I must get hold of a copy to see if it stands the test of time...glad you like it too. I think it was the first 'serious' fiction book we were ever read at school -well done to whichever teacher it was!

Angeliz · 04/12/2003 15:06

i once had a fantastic book from a book club called "Searching for Shona" about two little girls being evacuated during the war. One very rich and one very poor and they decided on the train to swap places. ( they were going to far off family! It was great!

boyandgirl · 04/12/2003 15:28

Yes Finbar, it does! A similar one that I loved and still love was I Am David. It was the first book that ever made me cry.

popsycal · 04/12/2003 15:29

aloha · 04/12/2003 22:37

Linnet, re A Little Princess - i fantasised for years and years about having a fireplace in my bedroom with a kettle on it, and tea things and cake in a cupboard. Still do, really. Fab book.
