contact lenses and astigmatism

I wore contact lenses for over 10 years until the after birth of dc2 where my eyes just became really dry and I gradually gave up wearing them. I now want to get back to wearing them.
So went to the eye doctor (everyone goes to one here - not in the UK) and he gave me a prescription - it hadnt changed so my glasses are ok.

The prescripton is (R) -2.50 -0.50 90
(L) -4.00
(I have no idea what those numbers mean!)

I then went to the optician and she thoroughly assessed my eyes and gave me some lenses to try for a week. The left one is great but the right one is a nightmare. My vision isnt always sharp and I can feel the lens all the time. So I went back today. She assessed it all again and said I might just need to accept that my right eye will never be as good as my left with a lens in because of ? astigmatism. (all in a foreign language so not sure). The lens is a toric one and weighted but she says it will move a bit everytime I blink so it'll never be perfect. She's ordered me a different one but it wont be there till next week.

Is this right or should I go somewhere else?

No that doesn't sound right, I'd go somewhere else.

I have extremely bad astigmatism and have worn lenses for years -- sometimes you just need to try different brands as they all have slightly different sizes. I tried a pair once that were very 'floaty' so I know what you mean. I use 1-day Acuvue Moist now and they're perfect.

If your eyes are dry it's better to go for daily lenses apparently.

You could also skip the optician and order lenses online, since you have your prescription, that way you could try out different brands yourself.

I wanted to order them online but because I've not worn them in a few years I thought I'd better get ones from an optician first. Would have no problem cancelling it again if I ordered them from there and then ordering online.

"floaty" is exactly how it feels and think it feels worse because I dont feel the left one at all. Tried dailies for a few years when I was still in the UK but hated them. Had trouble reading with them even tho i've no trouble reading even without glasses. Think thats what stopped me using lenses (that and the very knobby optician I last went to in the UK!).

But thanks for reassuring me that its not right. Will go somewhere else if the ones she gives me next week arent any better.

Just wanted to post that I picked up some different lenses today and they are fab. I cant feel them at all & my vision is great! Got to go back on weds to discuss price - worried they'll be expensive as they're so good.

Hello Ploom, I have the very same problem, even acuvue are not comfortable in my left eye. Could you please tell me which brand you've found works for you?

ploom, I have astigmatism, but am long sighted (+) not short like you, but I have got lenses. I got them through the opticians (are you in Germany? Optiker not Augenarzt) . Then I got the next lot from Lensbest online, using those measurement. They are toric and the exact same ones (same brand and everything) that I got from the opticians but miles cheaper.

oooh - I am very short sighted and with astigmatism so I always wore gas perms as they gave me much better sight than glasses. Not idea - but great sight. After birth of child they tried to sell me soft lenses saying they were now OK with astigmatism - I tried them and the world was in bloody soft focus. I ditched them.

I don't know which makes you are using - to me it's more about astigmatism and the best type of lense for you. For me it's still gas permeables and tbh I don't have time to do all this stuff so I stick to glasses even though my sight is not so good with glasses.
