Low Cost Make Up

tinkerbellchelle · 13/02/2006 19:14

I am doing a make up artist course studying at home while looking after my LO.
I get a professional make up kit but dont want to waste all of that on practise. I was wondering if anyone knows any good places I can get make up from - I need a huge variety of colour etc.

I was just wondering if there are any good websites or companies who sell it cheaply and maybe even a wholesale place or somewhere

thanx

I did one of those courses, was great- am sure you will enjoy it.

Look in the yellow pages under hair and beauty, there should be a wholesalers for bauty products you can use. Ask your tutors too, they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

tinkerbellchelle · 13/02/2006 19:42

thank you, they are all such good things. I will also get in touch with course tutor with ideas.
I just wanna practise as much as possible

thanx everyone x

Tescos have their own range, boots do the 17 range and Argos have kits with loads of colour, quite often the discount toiletries shops like semi-chem have the kits too for a really good price.

I know a make up artist who works on singers and models for music videos and shows so if you need any specific advise I can ask .

Tinker - register and train to become a BODYSHOP consultant - i did whilst on MAT leave and got loads of products and pocket money - and lovely rang eof make - up either cheap or free.

sharklet · 14/02/2006 09:27

The tesco make-up range is designed by Barbara Daly (well known UK MUA) and is generally good.

Look out for when they have special offers in boots which give vouchers for make-up -and register for an advantage card if you don't have one already.

Three Kings Theatrical do a discount for students and are very reliable. You'd also be buying good make up.

I'd say it not worth buying tat as you won't be able to learn the techniques properly. The really cheap stuff is really cheap for a reason! get some good mid range products to practice with. And get yourself down to the warpaint show if you can make it as you'll get massive discounts there!

Is your course a correspondance course? Do you get any face to face tutition?

sharklet · 14/02/2006 09:29

The bodyshop idea is a good one! Lots of my students do that and get a lot of great practice as well as making some extra cash.

Radley · 14/02/2006 09:30

Just out of curiosity, who are you doing the course with?

tinkerbellchelle · 14/02/2006 09:32

I get some face 2 face and also some work experience opportunities.
I will have a look at all the options.

thanks xx
p.s I have done bodyshop before so have some stuff left x but thanks 4 sugessting x

tinkerbellchelle · 14/02/2006 09:52

OP posts:
sharklet · 14/02/2006 09:58

It is reallt tough - but it sounds like you havea good attitude. Did you check out the whoistesting site? They have very good forums too whcih you might find useful.

Have you thought about progression? Things like HND's or something like FT2?

tinkerbellchelle · 14/02/2006 10:48

I think I wuld like to do a progression after this course .
I will try that whoistesting website
thank you for your help.
I think Im so determined to do well so hopefully if I keep pushing at it I will one day get there x

sharklet · 14/02/2006 11:01

FT2 is great its a programme where you basically get an apprenticeship in the industry - its a huge boost for a career. Heres the link FT2 Make-Up Artist

The BBC also run a programme called Vision which is a similar thing more make-up design based.

Other than that you could go onto a degree or HND Course, London college of fashion run a good one - or you might go for a diploma with a private college who specialise in your area (I think it was Fashion you were interted in?) Glauca Rossi are great for that.

tinkerbellchelle · 14/02/2006 11:28

sharklet thank you so much for your help. Yeah fashion and media work is what I am mainly interested in.
I have just joined the whoistesting so can use the forums there and will try that f2 website as well thank you so much x

tinks.. i've got a whole kit of Virgin Vie demo from when I did it.. i have palettes with eyeshadows, think i've got my blusher one and may have foundation one.. I have about 20 lippies, liquid eyeshadows, nail varnishes.. let me know if you're interested. They have all been hygienically used with brushes, cleaned each time, spatulas and disposable wands etc for mascara. Just can't be arsed to put it all on ebay, but it's sitting here doing nowt...

cyan · 14/02/2006 11:39

tink just had a thought if you look at the university of arts, creative careers page they have a whole load of possible work experience placements. Im not sure whether ay are specifically catered for Make-up, but there are a lot of reputable companies which advertise on there. Lots of major fashion labels, catwalk stuff maybe you could contact some and find out if they can give you work experience on a catwalk show etc. Also why not contact London Fashion College, see if you could shadow some degree students on their final projects get a feel for backstage life etc just a thought. Do you want me to dig out a link for you? x

tinkerbellchelle · 14/02/2006 11:48
