I was a paid-up member for a year but let my membership lapse. Have just had a contact from a girl I was at primary school with and when I tried to reply I was told I couldn't without renewing my membership. I don't think it used to work like that - just one of you had to be a paid-up member and if someone contacted you you could reply without having paid.

Call me stingy but I'm not prepared to fork out £7.50 to send an email to someone I haven't seen for almost 27 years (and the only memory I can dredge up of her is going to a birthday party at her house and being fascinated by her extremely rude kitchen clock).

what was the clock?

tamum · 13/02/2006 18:27

What, not even to ask about the clock?

That's weird, can you only contact people through their system now then? I know the original people sold it for a fortune to ITV, I think, so I assumed it would get more expensive, but that's a real rip-off unless you're on there all the time

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 18:29

Knew someone would ask that. It was two pigs (pretty sure it was pigs)... erm...getting acquainted. The 'Daddy Pig' moved up and down with the seconds. I was about 7 and was mesmerised.

Did she not include her email address somewhere in her message? I think all the messages I've ever had have included a return email address so it doesn't have to get sent via FR

Troutpout · 13/02/2006 18:29

What was the clock..what was the clock!

Troutpout · 13/02/2006 18:31

Got to be worth 7.50 Moo...just to ask about the fecking pigs!

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 18:31

Seems so, tamum. If she'd put her email address in her contact I could have done it like that - mind you, they probably have a filter. There's no way of seeing on the site if people are paid up members afaik - so she'll just think I'm very rude. Like her Mum's clock.

No, definitely no email address. When I right clicked and looked at properties the 'return email' was a convoluted FR one with lots of numbers.

did you actually get a message or was it an ecard ?

The reason I ask is today out of the blue I got an e-valentine card from someone I was at junior school with - and have not set eyes on since - and was not particularly friendly with anyway.

Call me suspicious - but I was wondering if they are drumming up business by sending out cards purporting to come from people long past.

Oooh, interesting theory throckenholt! I keep getting messages saying that x number of people have read my profile (currently 5 years out of date) in the last 6 weeks blah blah.

Moo, couldn't you find someone else you are desperate to contact, so you could get your money's worth?

Tinker · 13/02/2006 18:38

put your email address in your profile. i did just to see if it'd work and it did. no-one as contacted me though since

i got a valentine's card via fr a few years ago, never knew who it was from but the grammar was very poor so am quite glad about that.

Tinker · 13/02/2006 18:40

oh yes, tamum, just looked and mine's been looked at 10 times in last few weeks. allegedly.

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 18:42

No, it was a proper message. She remembered sleep-overs at my house (I don't remember her ever sleeping at my house) and the spooky tree outside my bedroom window (now that I do remember, huge hawthorn, stuff of nightmares - they come alive at night and eat you, you know - I miss aloha) and she remembered me sucking my thumb

Oh soddit, I might do it. Though I think I contacted everyone I wanted to contact when I was paid-up. Well...everyone except the one person I really wanted to contact, iykwim

I got a message from someone from primary school and I was too tight-fisted to fork out £7.50 to reply. So I sent a paper letter c/o her mum's old address, and it reached her! If you can remember where she lived you could always do that.

Jodee · 13/02/2006 23:34

As I understand it, if your membership has lapsed you can't reply if someone contacts you unless you pay up again (Dad just tried to contact me after 30 years - eeek!)

and I'm sure I had a message from them recently saying if you wanted to send a Valentine msg you could do so without paying.

CoolTurkey · 13/02/2006 23:44

Yes, you used to be able to reply direct.
Why don't you edit your profile with a message to tell her to try again and include her email address this time? She may read it.
