Washing dusters (I know, it's boring)

(But more interesting than going thru all my old mail to file/throw it)

How do you wash your dusters? I have 7 dusters, 3 of which have been used for normal dusting, 1 covered in antique wax from polishing my dressing table, and 3 have been used for shoe cleaning, and are liberally covered in polish.

Now, being eco friendly ..... They don't make up a full load for the washer on their own. I daren't put them in with anything else, in case they stain or make it smell of polish, and even if I wanted to handwash them (!!!!!!!!) I wouldn't get the polish out would I?

So do I hang the expense and effect on the environment and wash them in the machine alone, or what.

Off to file, will check-in later.

I stick them in with everythig else, never noticed polish spreading. I don't use them too much before washing, so they aren't really grubby when they go in anyway.

If mine weren't really covered in shoe polish, I'd bung them in with dark towels or jeans or something, but they are.
No one else? Is this just too boring?

I chuck mine away when they are dirty! but then again, I dont dust that often...

Be really careful if they are yellow dusters as they run like hell. I learned this the hard way and have a lot of yellowy tea towels as a result. Now that i have white dusters, i put on a hot wash once every few weeks and do all my cloths, tea towels, dishcloths, grubby kitchen hand towel etc in, i add a bit of safe bleach or vanish and it all comes out fine. It's not quite a full load, but it's not every week, so i think it's okay.

I wash my yellow dusters on their own on a 30 min quick wash cycle (30 degrees, 1200 spin) with delicates wash liquid.

Since they have polish on i would put bio washing powder and give a soak if poss, you might not get the colour of the polish out but it wont' be greasy, iyswim.

B%gger it, I've just put them in the machine to do on their own.

I handwash mine, but handwash to me means stick them in the sink in very hot water with some washing powder, leave them to soak for ages then rinse them - takes very little effort and they clean up very nicely

I don't care what they look like, just so it gets the old polish off. I never realised that having a son would mean that I would have to clean shoes EVERY DAY!!

Just waiting till I can trust him with polish, then, if HE muddies 'em, HE cleans 'em.

I throw mine away, is that very wasteful and irresponsible of me?

MrsBadger · 09/02/2006 11:49

We use brushes for shoes - one for putting polish on, one for buffing. Saves a lot of washing!
