got fairly young kids but really really fancy moving to Spain and starting afresh. i know it's a dream - according to lucy5!- but if there was enough of us with a dream and a little bit of money we could really start something couldn't we? anyone with a bit of inspiration?!

I would love to move abroad. I hate the cold winter months and I always find the spanish really nice and friendly, a lot better than most english people (except MNers of course).

We went to Costa Brava last September/October and even though the area we stayed in was beginning to close down for the winter I didnt want to come home. It was clean, the people were friendly, I loved it there. Have felt a bit down about living here ever since so if you can come up with a cheap and easy way of moving abroad, please tell me.

It wouldnt even have to spain i moved to, as long as it was warm, friendly and cheap to live there! what more could a girl want

flutterbee · 08/02/2006 22:05

not me I hate the heat and love British Autumn and Spring.

pebblemum · 08/02/2006 22:11

I dont mind spring and Autumn can be quite nice but wouldnt you want to get away from all the rain?

I hate having to wear lots of layers just to take my DS1 to school and hate getting cold and wet. I am counting the days until I can wear nice summery clothes again.

cutekids · 08/02/2006 22:32

what could we do out there,pm?
i would like to open-you probably think this is naff now!-a birthday shop. we usually go to magalluf for our hols.usually when kids birthdays are.noticed that there's no shops to buy wrapping paper;cards;cakes in that vicinity even though there are loads and loads of reps!!!couldn't even find candles!

oh yes please..greece

pebblemum · 08/02/2006 22:47

Thats not a bad idea. Funny before you mentioned it I had never really thought about it but you are right. I have been to several different places, spain, greece etc and while they seem to think it is ok to sell vibrators and porn next to the kids sweets in supermarkets I dont recall seeing things like that. I guess if you opened one up where there were lots of brits it should be quite a success. I've always wanted to be a party organiser so maybe we should join up you could sell the cards etc and I could look after the parties and decs

So what would you call your shop then?

handlemecarefully · 08/02/2006 23:01

I'd love an all year round out door lifestyle (i.e. better 'winter' weather), but love dear old Blighty too much to consider moving abroad. So will have to put up with crappy depressing weather.

lucy5 · 08/02/2006 23:15

A birthday shop is a good idea if you have enough Brits around! i have real trouble getting hold of decent cards. Most english owned places here double up with English books too. I hope I havent put a dampner on your dream

pebblemum · 08/02/2006 23:26

where do you live then lucy5?

lucy5 · 08/02/2006 23:32

I live in Spain, Estepona between Marbella and Gibraltar.

collision · 08/02/2006 23:34

oh no!

Been there, done that and lived in Italy for 3 years! Hard work, beauracracy is hell, heating is expensive, language probs, always treated as foreigners.

I had the idea of a card/gift shop in Italy but it wouldnt have taken off as they are so closed minded with their opinions that they wouldnt have bought my lovely cards....just kept with the crappy cheap ones they had.

Agree with Lucy. Enough Brits around you might be in with a chance.

And the heat is hard work when you have to earn a living.

BAH HUMBUG!! (sorry)

lucy5 · 08/02/2006 23:36

Thank you Collinson was beginning to feel like a miserable git. Ive benn here for two years and it's hard work. I love the weather and the outdoor life but i'm fed up of living in a bubble.

lucy5 · 08/02/2006 23:37

Oops collision! Sorry!

collision · 08/02/2006 23:38

where do you live and why, Lucy?

lucy5 · 08/02/2006 23:41

I live in Spain. We wanted to move somewhere warm and I already had my family here. My dh has a good job and dd is settled at school some days I love it and some days i hate it.

cutekids · 09/02/2006 12:08

"Happy Days"...? as opposed to Holidays???
bet that sounds a bit naff doesn't it? can't think of anything else as yet?

OP posts:
collision · 09/02/2006 22:08

people always think it is idyllic and it can be but v hard work too.

pebblemum · 09/02/2006 23:06

Its always been my dream to move abroad and I will do it one day. I know it will be hard work but I would be prepared for that and I am sure that if your heart is in it that the good would outweigh the bad.

Cutekids - to me the name of a shop doesnt matter it is the look that counts. As long as the front of it is enticing and it stocks good quality goods what does a name matter. I have often walked past a shop because it looks scanky (sorry ds keeps using that word, guess its rubbed off on me) but I have never ignored a shop because I didnt like the name. Happy Days sounds ok though, reminds me of the show, have been singing the theme tune since reading your post earlier. Dh now thinks I've lost it!!

Astrophe · 09/02/2006 23:27

Move to Australia! We are here from Sydney for a few years and really like the UK and proximity to Europe, but would never consider staying permanently.

The weather is great (as long as you stay Sounth of Sydney...otherwise its too hot) and there are so many Brits and other foreigners there you'll all fit right in!

CoolTurkey · 09/02/2006 23:38

We lived in Italy for a couple of years and I loved the food, wine, countryside and people. We made some good friends, but it wasn't all joy and bliss. Arriving to in place to live feels very different from arriving to holiday. It you are a worrier like me there are just yet more things to worry about and there were times when I was sick of being a foreigner and never quite fitting in. Culture shock I think.

The weather is more extreme. Too hot to function in summer and very wet in spring. You end up living in semi-darkness for most of the year with shutters closed either to keep out the rain (the windows aren't designed to be rain-proof) or the sun.

The best thing about being there was not having to send Xmas cards!! None in the shops and I never met an Italian who sent birthday or Christmas cards, so don't think a card shop would be a good business venture! Unless things have changed since we were there.

pebblemum · 10/02/2006 00:28

Have often thought about moving to australia, seems a really nice place and i suppose it is easier to fit in as evreyone speaks the same language-kind of. The only thing is the flight time. Im close to my parents and siblings so would want to pop back to visit often or get them over to see me. Oz may be a bit far to do that as much as I would like. Maybe I will get over there for a holiday one day.

eidsvold · 10/02/2006 05:34

not me - hot enough already

pebblemum - only a day away..... and its fab.

I love the heat so do my kids but we hate the cold. The only thing the kids would miss if we moved somewhere hot would be snow but then again we dont get much of it where we are now. Thats why we are going to Lapland in december so they get a chance to see proper snow!! Would rather go to Australia though but guess it wouldnt be the same for the kids.

hannahsaunt · 10/02/2006 11:56

Love Oz, love the heat (though not the humidity esp when there are storm/wildfire induced power cuts and no fans/aircon), but really miss the seasonal variations where we are (TNQ) - it ranges from pleasantly hot to hotter to really quite hot with the odd monsoon thrown in for good luck. Good places to go on hols on the stop overs en route to Oz/home. OTH come here and open a decent department store - everyone would love that!!!
