Please keep this receipt for your records. Do you? How long?

Had a letter yesterday from the local sports centre saying they hadn't received payment for a course my dd went on last November.

'..by our records no payment has been received ... either provide proof of payment for the above course or make payment of £27.50...

Luckily for me, after some digging, I turned up the receipt and the centre has apologised.

So do you keep receipts and if so, for how long?

I probably wouldn't have had it, but I use a debit card for payments over £5.00, so would have had a record there.

Depends what it is - supermarket receipts get binned fairly quickly but most others I keep for about 6 months until i can be bothered to get the shredder out!

Dh had a letter lasdt year, for a fine he paid off 5 years previous, he had no reciepts, they had no record of any payments, so he had to pay it again.

Dh keeps everything for eons - drives me barking. He tells me that official documents like payslips, bank statements, P60s and so on have to be kept for 6 years, and he insists that all receipts (apart from trivial bits and pieces) are kept for at least six months.

Well, looks like I'll be keeping receipts for at least six months from now on.

iota - I checked and I did pay by debit card, so could have proved it that way.
