hello, am a rep for local parents group, and used to run a playsession. I also volunteer for a political party and am trying to become a street watcher for the council!

I am on the rota for 2 toddler groups and help out with the NCT. Takes up far more of my time than it should but on the whole I enjoy it and feel that I do 'some good'- even if I just make the coffees!

I used to work at a kids activity holiday centre and I loved it, got to go out on the horse rides and help out with the other activities. The best weeks were the Irish ones when we had groups of Catholic and Prodestant kids over. That was when the troubles were still a big problem. I also worked in a creche, a Tradefair shop, Oxfam and playschemes great work experience and helped me to get the paid jodb I have had. Don't have the same time to give now, but I am considering working in a shop again.

I help out at some NCT sales (usually when I am a seller), and am on the committee fo rth elocal playgroup.

When I was younger and unemployed for a year I used to do filing and office work for the local cab, and the local volunteer centre, and also used to do volunteer driving (my favourite customer was Mr Christmas (really) who was blind and had shares in a race horse - I used to take him to the betting shop so that he could hear the races his horses were in ).

help a charity that looks after people with a terminal devestating muscle wasting illness... it is so hard meeting the people with the illness and it has really changed me... would recommend volunteer work to anyone just to show them a different side of life

mummyhill · 08/02/2006 08:32

I run a local mums and tots group on a voluntary basis. Why are the parents allways so supprised when you tell them that you are getting no monetary gain from doing it?

Surfermum · 08/02/2006 08:41

I've been a volunteer beach lifeguard for 30 years (started v young!). Dh has too for quite a few years. I'm currently not qualified but am still Treasurer for our club and occasionally help out on busy patrol days with things like lost children. I've taught hundreds of children swimming, lifesaving and first aid skills. I've never been paid for any of it but the reward I've got from it is a great social life, lovely, lovely friends, a long term partner and a husband (not at the same time!).

morningpaper · 08/02/2006 08:45

I'm on the local church council
I'm on the board for a local counselling service
Run a few websites for charities for free

Done lots of voluntary work with the homeless including crisis at christmas
Run lots of stuff for the church like confirmation classes, church fetes - that's the most REALLY annoying voluntary work because no one appreciates it

DH is a governor and is on a board of a national social trust

mousiemousie · 08/02/2006 08:46

Do a morning a week at my dd's primary school, helping out in her class

Would like to do more voluntary work but I have a job as well 4 days a week and there just doesn't seem to be enough time!

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 09:00

just remembered - I also used to cook a meal once a week at the local hospice for about 20 - had to work out the menu, do the shopping, cook, and clear up - all on a tiny budget.

acnebride · 08/02/2006 09:18

clerk to the governors of local school, for self interest - wanted to know in detail what it was like

that's it at the mo.

zippitippitoes · 08/02/2006 09:27

was a guide captain at one time, NCT newsletter editor, classroom helper, not sure what you'd call it for Latin america charity, ditto death row prisoners and amnesty international
