GREEN ENERGY, for the same price? Do you?!

Scottish power, for example, offer 100% H2O derived energy for the same price as their standard tariff:

"ScottishPower pledges to match the electricity you use with the equivalent amount of electricity from hydro-stations .....
Green Energy H20 customers pay exactly the same for their gas and electricity as customers on ScottishPower's standard tariff."

If you aren't on a 'green' tariff already, would you consider changing? Particularly if it were to cost you no more than you already pay?

It could make a world of difference

that is v interesting. yes i would consider it and will look into it. thanks

Is anyone else interested? I find it refreshing that a green product is being made readily accesible to all, rather than used as marketing tool (like organics)!

we erm think we are on this sort of scheme already!

katymac · 05/02/2006 11:13

However not all companies are very fair they "sell" green electric that they don't make and they can just pay a sort of "fine" or credit if they want

It makes it had to work out what's real and what isn't

I would switch if id did not cost a lot more - we looked at it before but it did cost a lot more then.

Levanna · 05/02/2006 11:18

Yes, one of the companies listed gives 10% of energy from a renewable source for the first 3 years, rising to 30% beyond that.

Uswitch seems to give impartial guidance over what the different schemes are about.

I remember looking into green energy before and realising I couldnt' afford to use it. Infuriating!

I'll definitely be using the S/P plan at my new home

katymac, I know what you mean. It is a worry that this might be the case, on the other hand, if it costs the same regardless, it's not a risk in terms of cost, at last!

oops

Levanna · 05/02/2006 11:49

Apparently only takes a few minutes online .

I've changed online before through the providers website, I think I'd probably cut out the middle site (uswitch) and do that TBH. Either way, it should be relatively easy.

how does it work with getting meter readings and final bills etc ?

Levanna · 05/02/2006 12:41

IIRC, your current meter reading is transferred to new company as starting reading and old company as final reading. Shortly after you should receive a final bill from old company followed by first bill from new company.
HTH
