Can anyone help with advice about Milton Keynes/Beds/Bucks/Northants areas to live, schools, quality of life etc? Thanks!

Help! We may be moving - I can't do much more than research unless and until we've got a written job offer but it's looking likely and I have NO idea about the area, having commuted to it but not lived there for the last while. The job would be in Milton Keynes so where we live will need to be commutable to there. So, my questions are:

Where is the nicest but not prohibitively expensive place which is commutable?
Is Buckingham as nice as it looks?
Does it have decent schools?
Why is Towcester so cheap?
Ditto Brackley, is it horrible?
Newport Pagnall, yes or def not?
Where else should we consider that's nice with good schools/nurseries?
Northampton, horrible or nice?
Flitwick, too far?
Someone recommended Ampthill, anyone know it?
We need to rent somewhere where we will be happy to buy in a year or so dependent on jobs/happiness etc - i.e. I want somewhere nice but not so expensive that in a year we won't be able to live there when we buy.

Are there any mumsnetters who are happy for me to CAT them for advice?
Our main criteria are a decent school for yr3 ds and a decent nursery for 2yo dd. They need to be closeish together if out of MK. Or they could be in MK and we could live outside. I'm fairly sure I don't want to live in MK itself.

Any advice terribly welcome, I am completely blind here and it's a big step and one I don't want to get wrong. I feel like we f*ed up moving from Devon tbh and I can't do it again. I have a Buckingham paper here and a MK one from last week so am sorted for estate agents but any other advice or links to sites would be really helpful. TIA. I will unashamedly keep bumping this too, hope no-one minds.

  3. nice countryside with gorgeous houses in the villages.
  4. good grammer schools / single sex schools/ private schools.
  5. sixfields/ dining

bad

  1. rundown estates
  2. alot of ethnic minorities/assylam seekers etc
  3. mainstream schools are pretty pants tbh

bump for WWW

Mascaraohara · 08/02/2006 20:09

hello Iota, thought I'd bump into you here!

Would really recommend Mk as a decent place for kids to grow up. Moved here from Staffs when I was 7 and I have to say it's pretty good for kids.

Would also like to second that some of the schools round here are pretty good.

Can I also be invited to lunch?

iota · 08/02/2006 20:18

Hi MoH - -do you work in MK itself?

Mascaraohara · 08/02/2006 20:24

Yes work in MK but not in the centre. You?

Mascaraohara · 08/02/2006 20:24

I work near Kingston

golds · 08/02/2006 20:26

iota · 08/02/2006 20:28

I'm SAHM AKA "lady who lunches'

iota · 08/02/2006 20:29

golds - have you seen Tescos Kingston since it was refurbed in August?? It's HUGE

golds · 08/02/2006 20:41

I moved away from MK 4 and a bit years ago, we live in staffs now, but dh family live in Kent. MK is always our 'stop off' on the way down.

I coudn't believe the size of it its amazing. I love MK, get home sick every time I go

CarolinaMoon · 08/02/2006 20:51

My parents live in Leighton Buzzard and we visit a lot. There's a lot there for the size of the town, although not so much in the way of parks etc and people seem to be building houses on any available bit of land - the playing fields next to my parents' allotments is next up for development .

Commuting (train or driving) seems pretty good from there too.

iota · 08/02/2006 21:21

MoH - CAT me and we'll sort out a new home for WWW together

Mascaraohara · 09/02/2006 12:50

I will CAT you iota, probably tonight as I'm just catching up on MN between 2 meetings!

WideWebWitch · 09/02/2006 13:01

Oh hello Iota and MoH, I hadn't seen these latest posts! I am a little bit scared that I might run into someone I work with on one of these threads, eeek, don't really want to be outed as WWW at work - can you imagine? Iota, you are sahm so that's ok and MoH, I hope I don't work with you (in nicest above kind of way, not for any other reason!). I still don't know what's happening with this, apparently they're going to make me an offer but I can't do anything until/unless they have. It's hard, waiting to see what happens. We're prepared to move, absolutely, if they do. Iota, can you say, roughly, where dh works or give me a MK kind of clue? Could he be my boss? Eeek!

Mascaraohara · 09/02/2006 13:18

It's OK WWW I wouldn't want to be outed as MOH either. Doubt we work together, what line of business are you in?

iota · 09/02/2006 14:47

ha ha WWW -- have always been coy about my former employment - -you might just work there and we might know lots of the same people!!

no worried with dh as he hasn't worked in MK for donkey's yrs , depsite us both relocating here for work reasons.

MoH works nr Kingston, so I didn't work with her

iota · 14/03/2006 19:01
