WHen they did ours, they sealed everything up, and had space suits and a decontamination chamber, and tested afterwards for fibres of asbestos in the air - sounds pretty much like what yours are going to do. To be honest I don't know about kitchen stuff - they might fill the room with a huge bag, and work inside the bag, otherwise it will get into things - probably worth checking! Think I would be inclined to be cautious and move everything off the surfaces, and then wash things before using them.

rickman our asbestos was in hallway
they built a plastic tunnel from back door to hallway cupboard and removed it
never had to do any clearing up etc
if in doubt phone HA and ask their advice
they should be able to tell you

ask for health and safety at local council and ask advice

What uually happens is that the contractors totally seal everything in ie they make a tent around what needs to be removed. The tent contains any loose fibres (although they usually damp things down with a special solution to try & minimise airborne fibres). The tent should ensure that no asbestos 'escapes'. Air tests after everything has been taken down should double check that they are no airborne fibres.

Personally - I would remove what I could from surfaces & possibly seal cupboard doors with tape.

If you are worried - get them to do lots of air samples from around surfaces (get them to wipe over the surafces & then take measurement)
