does anyone own an partment or chalet in a ski resort or know anyone who does- I'd love to but can't afford it but also would love to know if it's just one of those things you dream about but would in fact not be as great as you think

We're going to stay at a friend's apartment in Switzerland in a few weeks and know a couple of expat families who have a weekend retreat. It is fairly common for Swiss families to own somewhere collectively. Better if you or family are resident to use it yourselves frequently, I think, as it doesn't come that cheap. The ski and summer seasons are quite limited and very little happens in mountain resorts between April and July and October - December. However in Switzerland at least you do have to satisfy certain residential and financial criteria to be eligible to buy , although this is changing gradually. Within the EU it may well be easier.

where would you buy- I'd love somewhere you can go to in the summer as well as ski in winter/easter. Anyone been to Morzine, that looks like quite good dual resort

more than liekly Wengen or Muerren in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland, or may be somewhere like Zermatt.

A friend of mine has bought a chalet in Morzine. I think she said the skiing is about a 15 minute drive away. A nice place to go to in the summer too. I couldn't tell you how much they paid for it but it looks lovely. Hoping to go myself one day but they're doing it up at the mo. Also, I think its about an hour from Geneva, could be wrong and you probably know that already.

I don't know why I'm looking into it just in the hope that if i do enough reserach i could maybe make it possible...we're off to Obergurgle in April but I love the look of Wengen and friends go every year to Zermatt and love it. It's so expensive I'm just trying to see if there's any way if you bought a place and rented it out you could make it pay for itself and also get some skiing - dream on probably

An hour from Geneva would be about right (we tooka detour to it when we stayed at Chamonix, having spent the day in Geneva) but think it would be a real hassle to have to drive to the lifts and park. Maybe it is on a ski bus route though.

Zermatt is probably a better bet for rentals but the trouble is that the weeks you get the most income - Christmas, New year, half term - are the times you'd probably want to use it. You'd also have to pay someone to look after it, clean etc. At least in Zermatt the season is longer (end of April) and you ahve the glacier , so Easter breaks are still feasible, but on aesthetic grounds alone Wengen has the edge !.

Tasa · 02/02/2006 15:26

LiZS why would Zermatt be better for rentals- not having been no idea

Think Zermatt has wider general appeal, longer season and snowsure, perceived as more chic, larger resort both in terms of the town and the ski area with links to Italy. Only visited briefly in the summer though, not skied there - yet.
